Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Despite their original contest against Dean College being cancelled due to inclement weather, Hilbert College Baseball was still able to get a game in today. The Hawks took on the Catholic University Cardinals instead, in what was a lower scoring game than Hilbert has been used to, as Catholic took the battle of the birds by a score of 5-3.
How it Happened
After a scoreless first inning, Hilbert got on the board first in the top of the second to make it 1-0.
Alex Ellison singled to bring home
Dustin Hendrix for the game's first run. The Hawks were unable to capitalize with runners on the corners and extend their lead.
Catholic University had an instant answer to the opening Hilbert run in the bottom of the second inning. An RBI single tied the game at one, and a three-run homerun gave the Cardinals a 4-1 advantage after two innings.
The next three innings provided no change to the scoreboard due to steady pitching on both sides. Hilbert starter
Ronald Mort threw three scoreless innings, with five strikeouts in this span.
After the scoring drought, the Cardinals added another run in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch to extend their lead to 5-1.
The Hawks looked to rally in the top of the eighth, scoring a pair of runs before the Cardinal pitcher could record an out.
Emmanuel McClain scored on a wild pitch after a double to lead off the inning, and Hendrix singled to score
Nolan Evans to make it a two-run game. However, three straight outs ended the inning and the comeback bid of the Hawks.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- Hilbert out-hit the Cardinals 8-4, but a 6-2 advantage in walks helped Catholic pull out the victory.
- Dustin Hendrix was the only Hawk to record multiple hits, going 3-4 with an RBI.
- Brendan Walsh came into the game in relief for the Hawks, throwing perfect seventh and eighth innings.
