Box Score 2 BUFFALO, N.Y. – With excitement in the air, the Medaille College and Hilbert College baseball teams took the field at McCarthy Park with each team searching for their first Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference victory. Medaille jumped out early in the first game to grab a 21-7 win. Hilbert rebounded and held the Maverick's bats in-check in the second game, but the hosts rallied in the fifth inning to post an 8-4 come-from-behind win. Hilbert slipped to 0-4 in AMCC while Medaille improved to 2-4.
Medaille started fast in the 2pm game. They connected for 11 runs by the time Hilbert got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd inning.
Paul Wujek singled to left field and made it to third on
Anthony Wurstner's hit.
Ryan Bonafede grounded out to 3rd but was able to advance Wujek home and Wurstner to the opposite corner of the field.
John Babocsi's RBI single gave Hilbert hope of fighting back from an 11-2 hole. Unfortunately, the Medaille bats continued to connect and they added five more runs in the top of the fourth and the sixth innings while holding the Hawks to five total runs the rest of the game.
Sean McGrath started the final inning with a single down the right field line which started a flurry of Hawk doubles.
Tyler Sulski was first, followed by
Mark Anderson's RBI two-bagger and ended with
Tyler Shaw's two-run double that gave Hilbert their sixth and seventh runs.
Anthony Wurstner went 3 for 4 while scoring two runs.
Kevin Moore knocked in two runs and went 2 for 3. Five different Hawks took the mound in an attempt to stifle the Mavericks at the plate. They combined for a total of six strike outs with four walks while giving up 23 hits.
After a brief break, Hilbert took a different posturing and held Medaille in check through five innings. Hilbert scored first in the bottom of the 2
nd after
John Babocsi was hit by a pitch. Moore's single down the right field line preceded
Sal Carroccia walk. Now with bases loaded,
Michael Best reached 1st off a second basemen's error giving all runners time to move a bag.
Kevin Moore was solid on the mound but the two hits given up in the top of the 5th led to the Mavericks single tally.
The Hawks responded with three more runs of their own in the bottom half. Bonafede got to first after being hit by a pitch and Babocsi singled through the left side. Moore's hit sent Bonafede home just prior to Carroccia's single that sent Babocsi home. Best's single to left center gave Moore time to beat the throw home and gave Hilbert a 4-2 lead.
The 6th inning was a tough run for the Hawks. Moore got the Mavericks in a 2-out count before a 2RBI single started their rally. After a quick pitcher change, an untimely error allowed the runs to continue until Medaille ended with five new scores.
Hilbert came up empty their last two innings and fell 8-4 by the final out.
John Babocsi and
Kevin Moore each went 2 for 3. Babocsi scored two of the Hawks runs while Moore went 5.2 innings with three strike-outs giving up six hits from the mount and knocked in one of the two Hilbert RBI's from the plate. Wurstner and Carroccia were credited with stolen bases.
On paper, Hilbert is scheduled to play at Alfred State Friday, April 11th then travel to central PA for their AMCC match at Mount Aloysius College April 12. Weather permitting, Hilbert will turn around and face La Roche College in another AMCC game in Hamburg.
