Bobcats Claw the Hawks in AMCC Opener

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Hilbert Hawks were happy to playing baseball today.  They weren't happy with the results as Pitt-Greensburg took the opening AMCC double header baseball games from Hilbert, 4-1 and 8-0.  Greensburg improved to 3-1 while Hilbert started the season off 0-2.

Greensburg finished the game with 9 hits scoring their four runs off 2 RBI's.  Hilbert ended with five hits and eight strike outs as Joe Pernick earned the Hawks only RBI.

Patrick Matkowsky opened on the mound went 4.1 innings, striking out one batter while giving up four runs and eight hits.  Justin Crawley went the last 1.2 innings and faced five batters who all flew out or grounded out to end the game.

The Bobcats put three runs on the board by the bottom of the 3rd inning before the Hawks tacked a run on in the 4th.  Anthony Wurstner singled to the short to get to first base.   He moved to second and then to third after Ryan Bonafede's single to left field.  Penick's singled through the right side sent Wurstner home while two potential runs were still on base.  The Hawks next three batters either struck out of flew out stranding the runners. 

Greensburg added one more run in the bottom of the 5th to set the final at 4-1 as the Hawks were shut out the rest of the way.

Hilbert (2-12 overall) mustered only three hits in the second game as they were shut out by the Bobcats (9-8).  The hosts turned nine hits into eight runs off 7 RBIs. 

Greensburg had two big innings scoring four runs in the both the bottom of the third and the 5th while holding the Hawks scoreless.

The Hilbert pitching trio of Sal Carroccia, Tyler Roth and Kevin Moore faced 33 batters.  Carroccia took the loss, giving up the first four runs while picking up the only strike out in the bunch.  Roth faced seven batters in the fifth inning giving up the other four runs.  Moore gave up one hit but got the batters to ground out or fly out to end the game.

The Hawks will return to action and hope to host their home opener Wednesday, April 9th when Medaille College travels to Hamburg for the AMCC double header game.
