Coach Pernick Rallies His Troops on third base line
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALTOONA, Pa. – Playing their second day of  doubleheader games on the road took its toll on the Hilbert College baseball team who suffered two AMCC losses (9-5 and a 10-0) to Penn State Altoona today.  The Lions earned their opening league wins while the Hawks still search for a pair after three sets of games.

Altoona jumped to a 4-0 lead after their first at bats then witnessed the Hawks post 3 of their own runs in the top of the second.  Each team traded scores the next inning and remained quiet until the sixth.  Hilbert found home one time while the Lions made it back to the dug-out four times for the 9-5 victory.

Anthony Wurstner went a perfect 3 for 3 with 4 RBIs.  Tom Irish connected on 2 of his 4 appearances at the plate and Kevin Moore earned the only other RBI on the day.

Wurstner's double in the second inning sent all three base runners home before the third out.   Moore singled to center field in the top of 2nd which sent John Babocsi home and tied the score at 4-4.  Altoona's first batter in the bottom half hit a home run to take back the lead.  Wurstner doubled again in the 6th for his 4th RBI and forced yet another tie score at 5's.  The Lions fourth thru sixth batter in the bottom of the inning scored the game winning runs two with hits and the third reaching on an error.

Sal Carroccia picked up the loss after 5.1 innings facing 29 batters and giving up three earned runs with three strike-outs and two walks.

Hilbert struggled to connect the bat with the ball in the nightcap.   The Hawks finished with only three hits out of their 24 plate appearances.   Coach Pernick used a battery of pitchers to ward off the Lions, but the hosts finished with eight hits, 10 RBI's for the 10-0 victory.

Paul Wujek, Joe Pernick and Justin Crawley were the three from Hamburg to get a hit with Wujek and Pernick starting strong in the opening inning.  Crawley earned his hit in the 5th.  Beyond that, all bats were silenced.

Altoona put runs on the board in four of the six innings.

Hilbert returns to Hamburg later tonight and will regroup for their next AMCC game tomorrow, April 13.  The Hawks travel to Erie, PA for their "home game" against La Roche College in the DH to be played at Penn State Behrend's field at 1pm.
