Rookies Lead Hawks Baseball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FORT PIERCE, Fla – the Hilbert College baseball team returned to action early this morning with a double header against Delaware Valley.  The Hawks were in good shape in the morning game, but a rally late in the top of the ninth inning gave Del Val a 6-3 come-from-behind victory.  Later, the Aggies gathered their fire-power together in the sixth inning to take a 9-0 win which dropped the Hawks to 0-3 after their second day of play down south.

Freshman Ryan Bonafede led the Hawks in the morning game with three hits and one RBI while fellow rookie Anthony Wurstner chipped in two hits.  He and senior Joe Pernick combined for the other two Hilbert RBI's. Bonafede, Wurstner and Noah Rasnik were the three guys to work their way around all bags and touch home for the Hawks.

Patrick Matkowsky went four innings of work and struck out three while Sal Carroccia finished the game with three other strike outs.

In the mid-day cap, Tyler Wangler allowed one earned run over the five innings he saw on the mound.  The freshman gave up five hits while walking two.

Del Val picked up a run in the second and fourth innings but it was the sixth inning that really hurt the Hawks.  The Aggies put a string of doubles and base hits together and ran the diamond with purpose to grab the seven unanswered runs by the bottom order.

Tom Irish and Tyler Shaw earned the only Hawk hits in the late game.

The Hawks will return to action tomorrow with a double header contest against Geneva College beginning at 12 pm.
