Hilbert Men's Basketball Returns To AMCC Postseason Tournament

HAMBURG, N.Y. – For the ninth time in the last ten years, the Hilbert College men's basketball program, under the leadership of head coach Rob deGrandpre, is heading back to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference post-season tournament.

The 15-10 Hawks completed the AMCC portion of their schedule with an 11-9 record.  #5 Hilbert will travel to #4 Penn State Altoona for their First Round contest February 25th.  Fans who unable to travel mid-week can follow the action via live stats and live video (click the links above)

Hilbert, playing their first game of the second semester on January 8th, earned a 99-90 home victory over Penn State Altoona. The Hawks then moved through the second semester with a 5-8 record, suffering five losses to the top three seeded teams {La Roche (2), Pitt-Greensburg (1), Penn State Behrend (2)}.

Hilbert, who was just at Altoona over the weekend, is looking for redemption as their loss dropped the Royal and White to road-warriors as the 5th seed.

The Hawks, who earned their largest margin of victory against Pitt-Bradford February 12 (106-62) also battled to four nail-biting victories and fell in defeat in four others.

Hilbert claimed three victories by a two-point margin and held on for a one-point win over Keuka.  The Hawks slipped to league-leaders Penn State Behrend by four, La Roche and Pitt-Greensburg by three and fell just short of claiming an upset on Senior Day against the Redhawks (86-88).

Four senior athletes, who are looking to get back to the Championship Weekend for the second time in their four-year run, lead the Hawks.

Hunter Martineau continues to quarterback the offense, averages 6.8 assists while scoring 15.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and almost two steals per game.

Masia Phillips tosses in 15.1 points and comes through in the clutch at the foul line.  Alex Karamanos does a little of everything, running the floor for scores (9.7 ppg), diving for loose balls and working on defense in an attempt to draw offensive charges from opponents.  And Ryan Hogan can be deadly from beyond the arc when he gets hot (4.1 ppg).

The Hawks get help on the perimeter from Lazar Jovanovich (10.1 ppg) who leads the team in 3-point makes, and from Kyreese Fisher (4.3 ppg) who can create his own shot if not running the offense.

Hilbert continues to rely on youth in the paint.  The Hawks rotate between sophomores Jacob Braniecki, and Warren Richardson in addition to freshman Jon Evans.  This trio averages more than five points and five rebounds each while getting a hand up to deflect an opponent's shot at least once per contest.

#1 La Roche University (19-1) will host the Championship Weekend Friday and Saturday, February 28 and 29.  #2 Pitt-Greensburg (16-4) also received a bye and moves directly to the semifinal game on Friday.

#3 Penn State Behrend (15-5) will host #6 Mt. Aloysius (11-9) in the other First Round game February 25th in Erie, Pa.

The winner of Hilbert/Penn State Altoona game will battle the hosts, La Roche at 12pm Friday, while the #3v#6 victor will face Pitt-Greensburg at 2:30 pm that afternoon.

The AMCC Champion will be crowned Saturday, February 29 (1:00 pm) and be awarded the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
