HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College Athletics Department is excited to announce their celebration of the National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) Saturday, February 2 when they welcome the Orchard Park Youth Basketball Association's (OPYBA) girl's league.
Hilbert's athletic director,
Megan Valentine, and women's basketball's head coach
Amy Senefelder, will welcome director and head coach Bob Uglow and his Orchard Park girls division to the Hafner Recreation Center when the Hawks host Penn State Altoona (1:00 pm) in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Women's Basketball
Game of the Week.
The OPYBA girls will participate in the Division III pregame introductions courtside and about thirty minutes later play a mini game during the collegiate team's intermission period.
Coaches Senefelder,
John Hall and
Scott Foster, along with the 2018-19 Hilbert Hawks will host a meet-and-greet with the OPYBA players and their families postgame. Each participant will receive a free T-shirt from Hilbert to help commemorate the event.
#1 Hilbert (10-2) suffered their second league loss, an 88-75 defeat, to #3 Penn State Altoona (8-4) January 12 down in central Pa. The Hawks continue to sit in a two-way tie with La Roche College (10-2), the only other AMCC team to beat Hilbert this winter. Penn State Altoona had its five-game win streak broken last week after opening the AMCC season with losses to La Roche, Behrend and Bradford.
Additionally, the Hilbert College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be collecting winter socks, gloves and hats to donate to the Buffalo City Mission in downtown Buffalo. Socks are an extremely high-need item for homeless people, especially during the winter months (and this week!) when there is a risk of frostbite.
As well, the athletic department will be hosting raffles for fans to win prizes and tickets can be purchased at the entrance door.
MORE ABOUT THE NGWSD:
February 6, 2019 marks the 33rd Annual NGWSD. For more than three decades, this celebration has empowered women and girls to get moving, reap the benefits of physical activity and push past their limits both in sports and in life. The confidence, strength and character gained through sports and physical activity are the very tools girls need to become strong leaders, in their own lives and in the world.
This year's theme is
Lead Her Forward, to honor the many ways that sports push girls and women to achieve excellence and realize their boundless potential.
