HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College men's basketball team figured things out this afternoon as they battled back from a double-digit half time deficit to pull off a 93-90 overtime exhibition game victory against Durham College today.
Kirkland Ottey and
Jalen Smith were hot on the perimeter while
Derrek Carman found his grove at the foul line.
Durham (Canada) held a 47-30 lead by intermission behind a sizzling 54.5% from the floor and 100% from downtown (4-4).
The Lords extended their lead to 21 early in the second period until about the 10-minute mark, when Hilbert started their slow climb back.
Jonathan Jackson finished a traditional 3-point play to cut the score to 11 points just before the visitors went 2 for 2 padding their lead 74-58.
Carman hit a pair at the foul line and from the paint before Smith hit inside the lane and knocked down a long ball which cut the score to 7 points (74-67) with 7:30 on the clock.
Smith hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Ottey followed with a single hit which knotted the game for the first time in the second half, 78-78.
Both teams traded scores until
Jay Bergmann's jumper forced the five-minute overtime period.
Hilbert won the game at the foul line in the extra period going 4-6 while Durham went 1-4.
Ottey tossed in 21 points and Smith and Carman (5-11 from the floor, 11 rebounds) added 17 points each.
Hilbert out rebounded the Lords, 50-35 picking up 24 offensive boards.
The first test for the men's basketball team comes this Tuesday, November 15 when they host Elmira College in an 8 pm tip. Fans can follow the game via live stream video.
