Box Score Hamburg, N.Y. – The Hilbert Hawks men's basketball team looked to bounce back after their double overtime loss on Saturday but came up short against Penn State Behrend, 73-52.
Jordan Kumro led the Hawks with four three pointers and totaled 16 points in the loss.
The first half was a battle back-and-forth, with the Hawks taking an early 6-2 lead off a
Jerame Owens lay-up. Behrend responded and was able to tie the game at 9. Hilbert used a
Trevor Stark three pointer to take the 19-15 advantage but that was the only lead the Hawks had the rest of the night. Behrend used a 12-5 run to end the first half on top, 31-26.
Behrend came out of the break on fire, starting the second half with a 10-0 run, capped off by a Keith Wallace steal and lay-up. Owens ended the Hawks' scoring drought with an "and-one" layup off his own steal in transition.
Missed lay-ups and turnovers by the Hawks allowed the Lions to continue to pull away and they held a 22 point advantage with 12:55 left in the game.
Back-to-back three pointers by
Jordan Kumro brought some life back to the stumbling Hawks. He got himself to the line for a one-and-one on the next Hawks' possession and knocked down both free throws.
Stark drove hard to the paint to create an old-fashioned three point play to cut the Behrend lead to 16 and Kumro used his bonus free throws from an over the back call to make it a 56-42 contest. The following play, Stark used two more free throws to cut the lead to twelve. That was the closest Hilbert could come the rest of the night, as two threes on the next two possessions gave Behrend an 18 point lead and the momentum back. The Lions finished with a 73-52 win.
Along with Kumro's 16 points, Owens added 11 points and 8 boards, while
Sean Weisansal contributed 15 points on five of ten shooting from the floor. Stark finished with three assists in the loss.
Zane Hackett finished with 19 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double. Nick DeLisio added 17 points and 5 assists in the win. Wes Davic led all players with 11 rebounds and chipped in 12 points.
Behrend used 24 points off turnovers and 14 points off second chance attempts, compared to Hilbert's nine and five, respectively, to take the AMCC win. The Lions also outshot the Hawks 48.3% (including 8-16 from long range) to 31.5%.
Owens is now 18 points away from the 1000th point club.
The Hawks are back on the hardwood Thursday, January 22nd as they travel to play Medaille College. Hilbert beat Medaille 90-84 on December 3rd.
