SOUTH BUFFALO, N.Y. – In a very wet and rain-soaked game, the Hilbert College men's lacrosse team busted to a 16-7 non-conference victory over Alfred State College April 7. The game was moved to Pierce Field in Mulroy Park which made field conditions easier, but even the turf was wet and sloppy.
Matthew Simon tallied another game-high four goals as Hilbert improved to 4-2 on the season. Somehow Alfred State has managed to squeeze in 13 games this season and they stand at 1-12 overall.
Tyler Nicoloff and
Drew Ulbrich each added 3 goals with six other Hawks sneaking the ball to the back of the net. Seven different players assisted on all those goals as
Elliott Russillio led with 2 assists (one goal).
Adam Zawadzki, making his first start in goal, made 1 save and was credited with the win after 30 minutes of play.
Brenden Deady stepped in at half time and made 7 saves while surrendering 2 scores.
Most of the hard rain occurred during the first two quarters when the teams played to a 7-5 half time score. After intermission, Hilbert took over and scored three straight before A-State found the back of the net. The Hawks turned it back on scoring four more by the end of the third but added to their total with a pair in the fourth period.
Hilbert doubled up Alfred State on shots (52-26) and converted on three of their eight man-up opportunities. The visitors managed to win one more face-off than Hilbert (13-12).
Nick Kieffer and
Jed Bengert each won 50% of their face offs. A-State picked up just four more ground balls (32-28) but
Nathaniel Hyman and Kieffer led the Hawks with four each. With so many shots fired at the frame, Alfred State's two goalies combined for 17 saves.
Hilbert has two days to dry out before they get back in the swing of things. The Hawks host Keuka College, the 2013 reigning NEAC champions, April 10 at 4pm. Game location, right now, is Hamburg on the Hawks varsity field.
