Box Score 2 BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Hilbert College men's volleyball team closed-out their season with a clean sweep of games today played in the College Center at D'Youville College. Hilbert fought to 3-0 victory over Penn State Altoona before they battled to a 3-1 win against D'Youville College. After today's matches, the Hawks (9-25) set a new season-record with victories while playing the program's most challenging schedule, ever.
Hilbert opened the afternoon with a 28-26 win over Altoona and then cruised to a 25-16 and a 25-18 sweep.
Andrew Duncan carried Hilbert early in the first set earning 5 quick kills.
Korey Schwab's kill gave Hilbert their 27th point and Altoona committed an attack error to give the Hawks the first set.
Adam Weaver gave Hilbert five of their first six points to start the second set as Hawks jumped out to a 10-4 lead which they stretched to 21-13 before coasting to the second set win.
Altoona came back ready to play in the third set. Both teams played a close-set, with neither team able to hold a larger than two-point advantage. With the score tied at 13,
Andrew Wolbert's kill started the Hilbert run which stretched to 18-14 before the Lions called a timeout.
As he started the match, he ended it.
Andrew Duncan's kills gave Hilbert three of the team's five earned points for the win.
Hilbert finished the match with 51 kills (.328) while Altoona clipped the ball at .185 with 35 kills. Weaver added to his lofty total with 22 kills in three sets (9 digs) and Duncan earned his career high with 11 kills and team best two service aces.
Korey Schwab chipped in 10 kills.
Ryan Ratajczak chipped in 17 digs while
David Mellerski assisted 41 times in addition to picking up 11 digs.
Then in their last match of the season, Hilbert beat D'Youville for the second time this season. The Spartans took the first set, 25-23 before Hilbert rebounded with three straight wins (25-17,25-13,25-18). Hilbert had another good hitting match (.306) while D'Youville struggled to connect successfully (.092). The Hawks finished with 14 more kills with 11 fewer attempts than D'Youville.
Ryan Ratajczak and
Korey Schwab reached double digit digs with 14 and 11, respectively. Schwab also added 13 kills and four service aces collecting 17 points today.
David Mellerski posted another 42 assists to his career numbers.
Andrew Wolbert gave Hilbert four assisted blocks and
Andrew Duncan added six more kills to his career today.
Adam Zientek doesn't get a lot of ink, but his contributions late in the seasons have been invaluable. He gave the Hawks four kills and eight digs along with two assisted blocks.
Adam Weaver tallied 23 kills (.390), nine digs, one assist, one solo block and three assisted blocks in his final set of his Hilbert career. And what a career it has been.
