BUFFALO, N.Y. – Hilbert College battled to a 12-10 NEAC victory in men's lacrosse April 2nd. With the Hawks second in-a-row win over the Mavericks tracking back to last year's play-off win, Hilbert improved to 2-0 in league play and evened their overall record to 2-2. Hilbert out-hustled the Mavericks and dominated the fourth quarter to pull away with the win.
Freshman
Matthew Simon led the Hawks charge with five goals off seven shots to post his 11th goal this season. Junior
Elliott Russillio tallied three goals and
Drew Ulbrich added two scores and three assists.
Doug Takac was credited with a game-high seven ground balls while finding the back of the net once and setting up two scores.
Hilbert doubled-up Medaille in both shots (40-19) and ground balls (31-16).
Nick Kieffer won 11 of his 18 face-offs, as Hilbert claimed 14 of the 25 during the game. Hilbert's
Brenden Deady claimed his second straight win turning away six shots between the pipes.
Medaille was efficient the first 15-minutes scoring twice for a shut-out lead over Hilbert at the end of the first quarter.
Ulbrich got the Hawks on the score board just 35-seconds into the second period. After a Maverick goal at 8:54, Hilbert went on a 5-1 run to take 6-4 lead at intermission. Ulbrich and Russillio found their form with two each and Takac and Simon closed the gap.
Medaille rebounded and scored four unanswered goals after intermission before Russillio stopped the Maverick run. Both teams traded scores to close the 3rd quarter with a 9-8 home-team lead.
Brady Metcalf knotted the game for the last time at 10:19 and from there,
Matthew Simon went on a three-goal run for the win.
Medaille was led by Brock Levick's four goals as the Mavericks fell to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in NEAC.
Up next for Hilbert is a trip to the Albany area April 5th. The Hawks face Cobleskill in a 2pm important NEAC game on the road.
