Slow Start Got the Best of Hilbert in AMCC Loss

Andrew Wolbert (center) and Adam Weaver get ready for an assisted block
Box Score

HAMBURG, NY – It took a while for both teams to get going March 16th, but once they did, the Hilbert College and Medaille College men's volleyball teams played to an exciting match.  The visiting Mavericks took a 3-0 victory (25-17,25-14,25-23) in an AMCC match before Medaille claimed a straight set win over Penn State Altoona who traveled into Western New York for just that single AMCC match.

Adam Weaver led all players with 13 kills, but Medaille's Trevor Barrett finished with game high (.550) attack percentage adding 12 kills with one error to his match numbers
.
Freshman Andrew Wolbert gave Hilbert a defensive lift finishing with three solo blocks and assisting on two others.  Korey Schwab added five kills and matched Ryan Ratajczak with eight digs.  Weaver led the Hawks with 11 digs.  David Mellerski assisted on 11 of the Hawks 24 kills.

Medaille's .277 hitting percentage and 14.5 team blocks were the main reasons for their victory.

Barrett led with five solo blocks with four other Mavericks chipping in solo walls.

In the first match, both teams traded points early until a 14-9 Medaille rally off Hilbert failed kills and Medaille's blocking.  The second set started with Hilbert taking a lead off Weaver and Schwab kills and service aces.  The Hawks were hot until the Mavericks blocking at the net caused a shift in Hilbert's hitting.  The set ended with multiple free-ball situations with little offensive punch.  It wasn't until the third set that both teams really woke up and transitioned the ball more than two times.  The final set was very close the entire time with neither team holding a lead larger than three points.

Hilbert will host the rescheduled D'Youville College UVC match this Wednesday, March 19.  The match will start one hour earlier than normal with a first serve scheduled for 6pm.
