Adam Weaver,
Adam Heftka and
Ryan Ratajczak produced impressive numbers as Hilbert College split men's volleyball non-conference matches today against Thiel College and Keuka College. Hilbert dropped a three-set loss to Thiel, who, one week ago was ranked as the 15th best team in Division III, before they regrouped and fought to a 3-1 victory over Keuka College.
In the seven sets played,
Adam Weaver finished with 36 kills (5.14 kills per set) with a .311 attack percentage and added four service aces for the 4-12 Hawks.
Korey Schwab had 18 kills and
Andrew Duncan reached for 11 digs with the best hitting percentage (.333) for the team.
Adam Heftka was credited with 56 assists and he shared the setting duties with
David Mellerski who added 12 of the Hawks' 73 total.
Ryan Ratajczak posted 32 digs as Hilbert pushed through seven sets. Mellerski and Weaver got to 17 digs each while
Korey Schwab and Heftka chipped in 13 apiece.
A correctable stat for the Hawks was the 22 service errors they were tagged with.
Thiel College (5-6) took a 25-19 victory before they held on for two close wins (25-22 and 25-21). Weaver led all players on offense with 14 kills while Schwab and Thiel's John Turner finished with 10 kills each. The Tomcats ended with .229 hitting and Hilbert was close behind with .115. But it was Thiel's play at the net which hurt the Hawks. Michael Whitlock was credited with only two solo and three assisted blocks but he altered and deflected Hilbert's attacks multiple times.
Ratajczak reached for 11 digs and Mellerski followed with 10.
After a brief warm-up period for Keuka, Hilbert got right back to business. The Hawks and Keuka battled in the closest set of the day with Hilbert outlasting the Storm 29-27. The green and gold rallied in the second set to win 25-21 before the hosts earned 25-20 and 25-15 wins to improve to 4-12 overall.
Weaver dominated the match with 53 attempts and converted 22 into kills while chipping in 8 digs. Ratajczak ended with 21 digs while Heftka had 36 assists.
Andrew Duncan had a career game getting nine kills with only one error
Hilbert had the upper hand at the net finishing with 20 assisted blocks. Freshman Andrew Wobert lead all with six assisted blocks as Duncan and Weaver had four each while Schwab and Heftka added three a piece.
The Hawks were powerful at the service line as Schwab and Weaver finished with three aces each. But on the flip side, the Hawks were penalized by giving away 14 points through service errors.
Hilbert has a few days off before they travel to North Buffalo (Medaille College) February 20 and Juniata, PA for a tri-match against Juniata and Marymount University February 22.
