HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College men's volleyball team challenged Penn State Behrend to a 5-set match tonight and
Adam Weaver put on a show leading all players with 30 kills in 78 attempts.
Behrend took the first two sets 25-16 and 25-18 before the Hawks responded with a 25-23 and 29-27 bounce-back wins. Hilbert was hot going into the final set, but had too many tactical errors which allowed the Lions to improve to 2-1 as they won the final 15-13 set.
Korey Schwab had a strong hitting night finishing with 18 kills for Hilbert (3-4). It became obvious that Weaver was the go-to-person, so Behrend camped-out at the net and sent three blockers at him often. As a team, Behrend earned six solo blocks and combined for 32-assisted blocks to combat the Hawks offensive weapon.
Behrend's Nathan Steele had 17 kills (.333) and 8 digs. His play in the fifth set personally beat Hilbert as he ended with 6 of his team's 8 kills without any hitting errors. Kevin Smith led the Lions with 12 assisted blocks and two solos and 9 kills all at the net. Colin Ingram directed the offense with 28 assists and 7 digs and Ty Sheehan led all players with four service aces.
Hilbert's
Adam Heftka tallied 50 of the team's 53 assists, while adding seven digs and two service aces.
Ryan Ratajczak added 16 digs. Schwab also chipped in nine digs and two service aces.
David Mellerski led the Hawks defense with 20 digs and four assisted blocks.
Behrend was impressive in the second set with their 12 points earned from kills and 9 point off of blocks.
Weaver is 18 kills away from hitting 1,000 kills in his career at Hilbert College.
Up next for the Hawks is the competitive Golden Flyer Invitational hosted by Nazareth College this weekend. Hilbert squares off against #7 UC Santa Cruz and #7 Carthage on Friday before they play their rematch against Thiel and 3rd ranked Juniata College on Saturday.
