HAMBURG, N.Y. -
Jordan Botsford's overall court play led a balanced Hilbert attack as the Hawks beat Pitt-Bradford in four sets to improve to 6-2 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference league standings. Both teams played aggressive at the net with a combined 305 attacks and 159 digs between them.
Bradford dropped to 3-5 in AMCC standings with hopes of hanging onto their sixth place seeding heading into the play-offs next week. Hilbert continues to maintain their third place seed but with a win over Franciscan this Saturday, the Hawks could climb into second place and earn a bye in the First Round of play.
Hilbert started slowly in the opening match. They trailed 17-13 but battled back. With Botsford serving, Hilbert took their first lead (23-22). Bradford responded to every Hilbert point and the visitors held on to claim their only set win, 30-28.
The second set was close with neither team creating separation, until
Shannon Memminger stepped in the back row for her service weapon. Hilbert trailed 16-13 and while Memminger held that rotation spot, the Hawks rattled off 12 straight points to take the second set, 25-16.
The last two sets mirrored the first two. Close scores, strong hitting and good defensive coverage with a lot of free-balls to keep play going. Hilbert grabbed a 26-24 win and then held on for a 25-20 final set.
Botsford finished the match sharing game-high honors with Taylor McMillen from Bradford (17 kills). Botsford led both teams with an impressive .371 attack percentage with
Amanda Binder trailing right behind at .368 (10 kills).
Allegra Johnson chipped in 10 kills, one more than
Chelsea Reischuck.
Reischuck was all over the back line maintaining contact with the volleyball but she also shared game-high honors with Bradford's Kelsey Repke. They both reached for 20 digs. Botsford (15),
Kayla Lewis (12) and Johnson (10) did their part to turn a defensive stop into an offensive attack.
Hilbert earned more kills (53-44) with better hitting percentage (.194-.140) and finished with 11 service aces, five from Memminger herself.
With one game remaining this weekend, Hilbert can still improve their seeding heading into the AMCC play-offs for the second straight season. Currently, Behrend is in 1st place (8-0), Franciscan 2nd (7-1) and Hilbert in 3rd (6-2). With a win over the Barons this Saturday, Hilbert would force a 6-2 tied record, but gain the higher seed due to head-to-head competition. With a loss, the Hawks would play a game in the First Round, with the possibility of hosting.
Be sure to come back Saturday for the 1pm final game of the regular season and celebrate Senior Day with
Shannon Memminger and
Chelsea Reischuck, who have taken this volleyball program into uncharted waters as repeat play-off teams.
