MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Hilbert College Baseball completed a strong evening of competition on Monday with a sweep of Cairn, winning game one 6–5 before erupting late for an 11–5 victory in the nightcap to improve to 6-4 on the season.
Game One: Hilbert 6 – Cairn 5
Hilbert wasted no time striking in the opening game, answering Cairn's first‑inning run with a
Joey Haynes single followed by a
Patrick Evans RBI double to tie the score at 1–1. The Hawks broke the game open in the second as
Reed Lesmeister doubled,
Jude Khoury singled, and
Chase Porter drove in another run before
Logan Hoyt and Haynes delivered back‑to‑back RBI hits to push the lead to 4–1.
Cairn chipped away with a run in the third and two more in the sixth, eventually pulling even at 4–4. Hilbert responded immediately in the bottom half as
David Earsing singled, stole second, and scored on Hoyt's RBI double. Moments later,
Harley Hoag lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 6–4. The Highlanders added a run in the seventh, but
Patrick Evans, who moved from right field to the mound, closed out the final frame to earn the save and secure the win.
Haynes, Khoury, Evans, and Hoyt all posted multi‑hit efforts in a 13‑hit Hilbert performance, while
Ronald Mort (4 IP, 5H, 2 ER),
Andre Borges (W, 2 IP, 3H, 2 ER), and Evans (SV, 1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 Ks) combined to navigate the Hawks through a tight, well‑contested matchup.
Game Two: Hilbert 11 – Cairn 5
Game two saw the Hawks fall down early, as Cairn jumped ahead 5–1 after a five‑run second inning highlighted by a grand slam. Hilbert began to climb back with a run in the second, then continued to chip away with RBI swings from
Jude Khoury and
David Earsing in the middle innings. A
Joey Haynes sacrifice fly in the fifth cut the deficit further before Khoury launched a solo homer, the first long ball of his collegiate career, to make it a one‑run game in the sixth.
The seventh inning belonged entirely to the Hawks. After
Billy LoBello and
Aiden Hamilton executed a double steal, Evans tied the game with a sacrifice RBI. Khoury followed with a go‑ahead single, and the offense erupted for six more runs as
John Watson,
Austin Wasily, and
Ian Wasielewski all reached before Haynes delivered a two‑run single and
Woodley Fisher sent a two‑run triple to right, completing a seven‑run inning that put the game out of reach.
Jase Burdon earned the win with six steady innings before Evans closed the door in the seventh. Khoury led the offense with a three‑hit, four‑run performance, while Haynes and Fisher combined for seven RBI.
