GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. — Hilbert College Baseball used a five-run first inning this afternoon to earn a second decisive win over Fredonia this spring. The Hawks added runs in four more frames, including another five spot in the sixth, to secure the 14-5 victory.
On the mound,
Jase Burdon gave Hilbert four strong innings to open the contest and earn the win, while
Jacob Kim-Kubiak,
Alex Rumfola, and
Billy LoBello all appeared in relief. Rumfola provided the Hawks with a pair of scoreless frames, including an immaculate eighth inning, while LoBello retired the side in order in the ninth in his first career appearance on the mound for the Hawks.
Offensively, Hilbert got things started early in the contest, adding five runs to the board after the top of the first.
Patrick Evans and
Reed Lesmeister reached to spark the rally, and
Joey Haynes delivered the game's first run with an RBI single to center.
Chase Porter followed with a two‑run double into the left‑center gap, and the Hawks added two more unearned runs as
Dustin Hendrix reached on an error that scored Porter, before crossing the plate himself on a passed ball.
After a quiet second inning, the Hawks added another run in the third as Haynes, who found himself on third after a single, balk, and porter single, scored on a Hendrix single to make it 6-0.
Fredonia briefly halted the momentum with a single run in the fourth, but Hilbert responded in the fifth, using a walk, a single, and two stolen bases to set the table for Hendrix, whose base hit through the middle plated two more to push the lead to 8-1.
Fredonia mounted its biggest push in the bottom of the fifth, narrowing the margin to 8–4 on a three‑run homer. The Hawks, however, answered immediately with their most productive inning since the opener. Hilbert piled on five runs in the sixth, highlighted by doubles from
Harley Hoag and Lesmeister, a run‑scoring single from Haynes, a passed ball that brought home Haynes, and a sacrifice fly by Hendrix, stretching the lead to 13–4.
The Hawks added their final run in the ninth when
Garrett Brink drove a double to center to score
Shane Pray, who had doubled moments earlier.
Hilbert's offense finished with 14 hits, including five doubles, and 11 stolen bases. Haynes led the way with a three‑hit, four‑run performance, while Porter added two hits, two RBI, and three runs scored. Hendrix drove in four, and
Jude Khoury contributed a pair of hits and an RBI.
