HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College Women's Basketball hosted Pitt-Greensburg this afternoon inside a packed Hafner Recreation Center as the Athletics Department celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day throughout the contest.
In a back-and-forth matchup, the Hawks used a decisive 36-24 second half to earn the 54-49 AMCC victory and complete the season sweep of the Bobcats.
After Hilbert jumped out to leads of 2-0 and 4-3 early in the game, the visiting Bobcats responded with a nine-point run to pull ahead with two minutes remaining in the opening quarter. The Hawks would answer with the final five points of the frame to cut the deficit to 12-9.
The second quarter saw Hilbert knot the score at 16-all, but another Pitt-Greensburg run sent the Hawks into the locker room down 25-18.
Bianca Iten (four points) and
Learsi Sabala (three points) led the way for the Hawks in the frame.
Out of the break, Hilbert quickly erased the Greensburg advantage, before taking a lead of their own thanks to buckets from
Nyema Blair and Iten. After a free throw put the Hawks down 28-24 with 7:46 remaining in the quarter, a 10-0 run flipped the script of the matchup. Hilbert was led by Blair who poured in six points in this span, while
Hailey Alba,
Jayla Jackson, and Iten each added a bucket as well. Another bucket from Iten late in the frame saw the Hawks lead 36-33 heading into the game's final ten minutes.
Hilbert carried the momentum into the fourth quarter, where an 18-16 advantage would close out the game for the Hawks. Greensburg closed the Hilbert lead to one point with under four minutes to go in the contest, but a jumper by Blair and a three from
Kayla Johnson helped the Hawks regain control. Hilbert got free throws from Iten and Johnson down the stretch to hold off the Bobcats and close out the victory.
The Hawks were led by
Nyema Blair and
Bianca Iten who each contributed double-digits points with 17 and 13, respectively.
Learsi Sabala led the way on the glass with 11 rebounds to go with her seven points, while
Hailey Alba added four points, three steals, and seven rebounds.
