HAMBURG, N.Y - Today, February 4, 2026, Hilbert College Athletics proudly celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day, honoring the strength, resilience, and leadership of girls and women who compete, coach, and lead in athletics at every level. This day recognizes the powerful impact sports have in building confidence, fostering teamwork, and creating opportunities that extend far beyond competition.
Hilbert College Athletics celebrate the trailblazers who paved the way, the student-athletes who inspire us today, and the future generations who will continue to break barriers.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day is a reminder that when girls and women are given equal opportunities to play and lead, everyone wins.
All Hilbert female student-athletes are encouraged to participate in the celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day this Saturday, February 7th before, during and after the 1:00 pm women's basketball game inside the Hafner Recreation Center. Please join in the fun as the Athletics Department will honor each of the Hawks at center court!
History of NGWSD
National Girls & Women in Sports Day (
NGWSD) began in 1987 as a special day in our nation's capital to recognize women's sports. The day united premiere organizations and elite women athletes to bring national attention to the promise of girls and women in sports. In the beginning,
NGWSD served as a remembrance of Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and dedication to promoting equality for women's sports; Hyman died of Marfan syndrome in 1986. It has since evolved into an event to acknowledge the accomplishments of women athletes, the positive influence of sports participation and the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports.
NGWSD is a national day co-founded and powered by the
Women's Sports Foundation, supported by its team of champion athletes. Annually, schools and community‑serving organizations host over 300 grassroots events across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. with an estimated reach of 200,000 girls and women.
