HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College Women's Hockey returned home on Tuesday afternoon to host the Elmira College Soaring Eagles in a UCHC matchup at the Nike Base. The Soaring Eagles, who received votes in the latest USCHO.com Women's Hockey Poll, used a strong first period to take down the Hawks, 6-0.
Elmira applied pressure from the opening faceoff, firing two shots inside the game's first minute on Hilbert goaltender
Tia Card, who was called upon early and often throughout the afternoon. After Card stopped the first 13 Soaring Eagle shots, the visitors opened the scoring on a rebound halfway through the first period. Elmira quickly extended its lead with a pair of goals, before adding a fourth goal with less than a second remaining in the opening frame to take a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Hilbert settled in on both ends in the second period, earning a power play midway through the frame. However, Elmira struck shorthanded at 11:25 to push the advantage to 5-0, which is what the scoreboard would read as the teams went to the locker room.
After the break, the Soaring Eagles would quickly strike less than three minutes into the third period to make it a 6-0 game. Elmira kept up the pressure through the final whistle, but Card stopped the final 21 shots of the afternoon to complete her strong outing.
Card recorded 70 saves in the contest and stopped at least 20 shots in each period, while the Hawks added 30 blocked shots defensively.
Sadie Plotkin led the way with six blocks, while
Caitlin Conrad added five and
Jamie Bower chipped in with four.
