Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Kara Rehbaum

Sabala Records a Double Double Against Altoona

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's basketball team dropped a 62–48 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference decision to Penn State Altoona on Wednesday afternoon at the Brad Hafner Recreation Center.

The Hawks (1–12, 1–3 AMCC) struggled to find offensive consistency in the opening half as Penn State Altoona (7–5, 2–1 AMCC) used its size and rebounding advantage to build a 42–25 lead at halftime. The Lions controlled the glass early, generating second-chance opportunities and limiting Hilbert to 25 first-half points.

Hilbert responded with its strongest stretch coming out of the locker room, outscoring Altoona 17–8 in the third quarter. The Hawks tightened defensively and shot 44.4 percent from the field in the period, trimming the deficit to single digits and bringing renewed energy to the contest. However, Penn State Altoona regrouped in the fourth quarter and closed the game on a 12–6 run to seal the conference victory.

The Lions finished the game with a commanding 56–35 advantage on the boards, including 25 offensive rebounds, which led to 18 second-chance points. Altoona also held Hilbert to 32.7 percent shooting from the field.

Learsi Sabala led the Hawks with a team-high 14 points and 10 rebounds, recording her second double-double while playing all 40 minutes. Mia Aldaya added 12 points, connecting on four three-pointers, while Nyema Blair chipped in nine points. Bianca Iten provided a spark off the bench with nine points and three steals.

Despite the loss, Hilbert showed resilience pulling within eight points by the end of the third quarter.  The Hawks held the Lions to 30.1 percent shooting overall, including just 13.0 percent from beyond the arc.

Hilbert returns to action this weekend with a quick trip to Pittsburgh to battle La Roche University January 10th in a 2 pm tip.
