Hawks Fall to Alfred State at Home

HAMBURG, N.Y. — Hilbert College Women's Basketball hosted Alfred State this evening inside the Hafner Recreation Center. The Hawks battled early and throughout the AMCC contest, but the Pioneers used timely three-point shooting and quick transition offense for the 74-60 victory.

After falling down early in the first quarter, the Hawks used a 7-0 run to grab a 9-6 lead with 6:39 to go in the opening frame. Layups from Bianca Iten and Learsi Sabala, and a three from Kayla Johnson helped Hilbert take an early advantage. Alfred State responded with a seven-point run of its own, and after Promesse Rwigamba knotted the game at 12 at the free throw line, the visitors rallied late in the quarter to take a 19-5 lead after ten minutes of play.

The momentum shifted in the second quarter as the Hawks struggled to convert offensively, managing just three field goals while Alfred State found rhythm around the rim. The visitors used a 15–9 frame to build a 34–24 halftime lead. Mia Aldaya connected from deep, Sabala added four points inside, and Iten contributed with two points in the frame.

After the break, Hilbert cut the deficit to just three points with two Nyema Blair layups, another three from Johnson, and two free throws from Sabala, but a late push from the Pioneers in the quarter saw the Hawks trail by ten heading into the final ten minutes of the contest.

Hilbert continued the offensive pressure in the fourth quarter as the Hawks poured in 17 points. However, Alfred State continued its offensive success in the frame, adding 21 points to close out the conference victory.

Blair led the Hawks with 18 points, while also pacing the team with four steals defensively. Johnson added 17 points on a perfect 4/4 effort from behind the lines, while Sabala contributed 13 points, to go along with a game-high nine rebound and five blocks.

UP NEXT:

Hilbert returns to action this weekend when they welcome La Roche University to the Hafner in a early afternoon contest - time to be determined.  The Hawks and Redhawks will shift their game to earlier in the day so the visitors can travel back to Pittsburgh before the pending ice storm creates unsafe travel conditions.
