HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert Women's Soccer team scored first this afternoon against Alfred University, but the Hawks couldn't hold off a strong Saxon offense, falling 4–1 on Saturday afternoon at Hawk Field.
The Hawks grabbed the early lead in the 14th minute thanks to a rocket off the foot of
Ja'Lynn Sanders for her second goal of the season. After
Mikaylah Nissan won the ball in her own half, she played a through ball to Sanders, who took one touch and found the back of the net from well outside the 18-yard box to make it a 1-0 game.
However, Alfred responded quickly, converting a penalty kick just three minutes later to even the score. The Saxons took the lead in the 33rd minute on a strike from Lina Young, who finished with two goals and an assist on the day.
Alfred carried the momentum into the second half, adding goals from Julia Flaitz and Alex Ruzekowicz to seal the 4–1 result.
Hilbert generated seven shots, including four on target, while
Keira McFarland continued her steady play in net for the Hawks with 10 saves.
Vanessa Van Slyke added a shot on net to a trio of Sanders' attempts on goal.
