Baseball Drops a Pair to Bradford

HAMBURG, NY – Hilbert College Baseball hosted Pitt-Bradford this afternoon in the final AMCC regular season doubleheader of the campaign for the Hawks. After falling in both games to the Panthers, Hilbert drops to 7-7 in league play and currently sits in 5th place in the AMCC ahead of next week's double elimination tournament.

Bradford took an early lead in game one and never looked back, as the Hawks trailed the entire way in an 8-4 defeat.

Joey Haynes and Dustin Hendrix led the offense in the contest as the duo combined for four hits (two each) and all three of the team's RBI (Hendrix – 2, Haynes – 1).

Dylan Moorhouse occupied the mound for the first five innings for the Hawks, allowing five runs and striking out four in the losing effort, while David Alessi allowed just one run in two innings of relief.

Game two saw the Hawks take a lead into the ninth, but the Panthers rallied with four runs in the frame to comeback and complete the sweep with an 8-6 victory.

Harley Hoag, Kyle Borrello, and Alex Ellison each recorded multiple hits in the contest, while Borrello and Ellison each knocked in a pair of runs.

Tyler Noel gave Hilbert five scoreless innings to begin the contest, allowing just four baserunners in the outing.

Game One: Hilbert 4 – Pitt-Bradford 8
Game Two: Hilbert 6 – Pitt-Bradford 8

Game One:
  • The Panthers jumped out to an early lead as a sacrifice fly opened the scoring in the top of the first. The visitors would double the lead in the top of the third with an RBI single to make it a 2-0 game.
  • The bottom of the third saw the Hawks strike for the first time in the contest as Hendrix's double plated Haynes, but the Panthers answered with four more runs in the top of the fourth to extend the lead to 6-1, before making it a 7-1 game in the top of the fifth.
  • Hilbert answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame on a Haynes RBI and a Hoag steal of home, but the Panthers would once again have an answer as a sixth inning Bradford run sent the Hawks into the seventh down 8-3.
  • Despite loading the bases in the frame, Hilbert was only able to manage a single run as the seventh inning comeback effort fell short in the 8-4 defeat.
Game Two:
  • The offenses on each side started slow in the night cap, as Borrello's two RBI double in the bottom of the fifth would open the scoring and give Hilbert its first lead of the twin bill.
  • The advantage doubled the following frame as the Hawks used an Ellison sacrifice fly and an error to take a 4-0 lead into the seventh.
  • The next four runs of the game belonged to the Panthers as a one-run seventh, followed by a three-run effort in the top of the eight knotted the game at four.
  • However, the game did not stay deadlocked long as an error allowed Nolan Evans to score in the bottom of the eighth to put the Hawks ahead, before Ellison's second RBI of the game double the advantage and sent Hilbert into the ninth up 6-4.
  • In the final frame, Bradford exploded for four more runs to not only erase the Hilbert lead but create a two-run advantage of their own, which held following a 1-2-3 bottom of the frame to wrap up the sweep.
