JOHNSTOWN, PA – Hilbert College Baseball opened play in the AMCC Postseason Double Elimination Tournament this afternoon against the Mount Aloysius College Mounties at Sargent's Stadium.
With a 9-8 walk-off victory over the Mounties, the Hawks advance to the winner's bracket and will take on Penn State Behrend, the tournament's top seed, tomorrow at 1 pm.
Hilbert stormed out to an early 3-0 lead after the second inning and looked to cruise to a win after extending the advantage to seven runs after the fourth, but Mount Aloysius used runs in the final four innings, including a pair in the top of the ninth with two outs, to knot the score at eight all and force an extra frame.
Following a quick 1-2-3 top half of the tenth from
Tyler Noel,
Garrett Brink played the role of hero as the freshman's pinch-hit RBI single in the home half of the inning scored
Woodley Fisher to give the Hawks the 9-8 postseason victory.
How it Happened
- Hilbert opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Austin Wasily, Joey Haynes, and Kyle Borrello all recorded an RBI, before Patrick Evans doubled to score Dustin Hendrix in the bottom of the third to make it a 4-0 game.
- The fourth inning saw the Hawks tack on three more runs on a Jack Duffek single, and a two-RBI single from Patrick Evans to extend the lead to a commanding 7-0.
- Nolan Evans, making the start on the mound, made quick work of the Mounties early and often in the contest, allowing just one hit through a scoreless opening five frames.
- The sixth inning, however, saw the Mountie fight back as the tournament's fifth seed posted a four-run effort to cut the lead to 7-4. Hilbert would get a run back on an Alex Ellison RBI single in the bottom of the inning, but Mount Aloysius answered right back with a run in each of the next two frames to send the game to the ninth with Hilbert's lead cut to 8-6.
- In the final regulation inning, the Mounties were down to their final strike with runners on second and third, before a two-out single scored a pair and tied the game at 8-8.
- After the Hawks failed to capitalize with a runner on second in the bottom of the ninth, the game was sent to extra innings with the winner to be decided in dramatic fashion.
- Following a scoreless frame from Noel, who appeared on last week's D3baseball.com team of the week, Hilbert used a Logan Hoyt pinch-hit single plus a Mount Aloysius error to place pinch-runner Woodley Fisher on second base as the game's winning run.
- After the Mounties intentionally walked Hendrix, Brink stepped up and sent the ball down the third base line to score Fisher and win the game for the Hawks.
