Baseball Sets Single-game Home Run Record in Sweep of Altoona

ALTOONA, PA – Hilbert College Baseball traveled to take on the Penn State Altoona Lions this afternoon in an AMCC doubleheader between two squads battling for postseason positioning. In the crucial twin bill, the Hawks' offense exploded for 38 runs on 34 hits, including a program single-game record eight home runs in the night cap.

After Dustin Hendrix got the long ball party started in game one with a three-run shot, Joey Haynes (two), Kyle Borrello (two), Harley Hoag, Jack Duffek, Nolan Evans, and Austin Wasily all cleared the wall in the 22-14 game two victory.

Hendrix led the offense in the 16-3 game one rout as the sophomore first baseman produced six RBI in a 2-4 performance. David Earsing also chipped in with multiple RBI on a two-run scoring single, while Haynes, Borrello, Duffek, Alex Ellison, and Reed Lesmeister all brought in a runner.

On the mound, Nolan Evans went five solid innings allowing three runs (two earned), while striking out three Lions in the winning effort. David Alessi and Josh Magda each provided the Hawks with a scoreless inning in relief to wrap up the game one victory.

Five Hawks recorded multiple RBI in the historic game two effort as Haynes, Duffek, and Nolan Evans all knocked in four runs, while Borrello and Wasily plated three and two respectively.

Twelve of the team's 22 hits in the game went for extra bases as Haynes, Hendrix, Patrick Evans, and Nolan Evans added doubles to the eight homers.

Joe Reitebach earned the win on the mound for his five scoreless frames. The senior right-hander was dominant in his relief appearance as he held the Lions to just three hits while punching out eight batters.

Game One: Hilbert 16 – Penn State Altoona 3
Game Two: Hilbert 22 – Penn State Altoona 14

Game One:
  • Hilbert was all over the pitching of the Lions early game one as the Hawks grabbed seven of the game's first eight runs, including three-run efforts in both the first and fourth innings. Borrello, Hendrix, and Duffek each scored a runner in the top of the first, before an error allowed Ellison to score in the top of the third to make it 4-0.
  • Following an Altoona run in the bottom of the third, Hendrix's three-run homer to right center scored Haynes and Hoag to extend the lead to 7-1.
  • The Lions cut the lead to 7-3 with a long ball of their own in the home half of the fourth, but the Hawks used multi-run efforts in each of the final three frames to run away with this one.
  • A run-scoring error, followed by a Hendrix two RBI double made it a seven-run advantage after the fifth, before a wild pitch and a Haynes' RBI gave the Hawks a 12-3 lead heading into the seventh.
  • In the final frame, Ellison, Lesmeister, and Earsing (two) all tacked on RBI to round out the Hilbert offense in the decisive 16-3 victory.

Game Two:
  • Borrello's two-run shot in the top of the first continued the offense for Hilbert and gave the Hawks an early 2-0 lead, but the Lions answered with the next nine runs of the contest as a seven-run first was followed up by a two-run second to make it 9-2 after two innings of play.
  • However, Hilbert's offense showed no sign of slowing down as the royal and white paired runs in five of the next six innings, with Reitebach's shutdown performance to come all the way back and take a 15-9 lead after 13 unanswered runs.
  • After a four spot in the third, and two more runs in the top of the fourth, the Hawks had quickly cut the deficit to just one run. Hendrix's RBI single, followed by RBI doubles from Patrick Evans and Duffek got the comeback started, before Borrello's second home run of the game followed by a Nolan Evans' sacrifice fly made it 9-8 after four innings.
  • The teams combined for the only scoreless frame of the game in the fifth, but Hilbert quickly got back on track in the sixth as Duffek's two-run blast to left center but the Hawks in front 10-9 for their first lead of the game.
  • An error allowed Hilbert to double the lead in the seventh, before two-run shots from Wasily and Haynes in the top of the eighth rounded out the 13-0 run and extended the lead to 15-9.
  • Altoona got a run back in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single, but the Hawks would explode for their biggest offensive outburst in the top of the ninth to shut the door on any comeback effort of the Lions.
  • Home runs by Nolan Evans (three-run), Haynes (two-run), and Hoag (solo), as well as a wild pitch added seven more runs to the board for the Hawks and secured the single-game home run record for the team.
  • The Lions added four more runs one a three-run shot of their own and an error in the bottom of the ninth, but a strikeout of the last batter ended the 22-14 contest with the Hawks earning the AMCC sweep.
