Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Valley Forge

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Hilbert College Baseball continued play at the Ripken Experience this evening with a doubleheader against the University of Valley Forge on Ebbets Field. The Hawks earned a close win in game one before falling in game two to split the twin bill.

Game One: Hilbert 5 – University of Valley Forge 4
Game Two: Hilbert 5 – University of Valley Forge 10

Game One:
  • Hilbert got out to an ideal start in the first game of the day, as the Hawks held a 5-0 lead after two innings of play. Tyler Noel shut down the offense of the Patriots, while Nolan Evans (two), Dustin Hendrix (two), and Jack Duffek brought runners home for the royal and white.
  • The pitchers on both sides settled in following the early Hilbert runs, as each team went scoreless in both the third and fourth innings.
  • Valley Forge broke through on the scoreboard thanks to a fifth inning sacrifice fly and continued to make things interesting with a two-run effort in the sixth.
  • Brendan Walsh recorded a pair of quick outs to begin the final frame, but a double and a single from the Patriots cut the lead to 5-4. With the go-ahead run at the plate, Griffin McAndrews caught the runner on first stealing for the third out of the inning, and final out of the contest to wrap up the 5-4 Hilbert victory.
Noel earned the win on the mound in his first outing with the Hawks after 5.2 innings of three-run ball. The junior transfer from SUNY Erie tossed in three strikeouts in his walkless outing.

Walsh extended his lead atop the program's all-time save leaderboard with his first of the year after 1.1 innings of work.

At the plate, Hendrix led Hilbert with a pair of hits and RBIs, while Evans also drove in two runs of his own.

Game Two:
  • Hilbert enjoyed a similar start in game two of the evening as the Hawks held a 3-1 advantage after two innings. Kyle Borrello recorded a pair of RBIs, while Logan Hoyt brought home Harley Hoag on a single to give Hilbert the two-run lead.
  • However, the Patriots erased the early deficit with four unanswered runs to take a 5-3 lead after the fifth inning.
  • Hilbert immediately had an answer, tying the game with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Joey Haynes walked with the bases loaded, and Borrello recorded his third RBI of the game to make it a 5-5 contest.
  • Once again, Valley Forge found the offense to respond, scoring five runs in the bottom of the frame to take control of the game.
  • An empty seventh inning for the Hawks allowed the Patriots to take game two 10-5 and earn the doubleheader split.
Borrello chipped in with three RBIs for the Hawks, while Hoyt and Haynes each brought in a runner of their own to round out the Hilbert offense.

Alex Rumfola started the contest on the mound for Hilbert and went four innings allowing three runs while striking out a pair.
