MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Hilbert College Baseball continued its' winning ways down at the Ripken Experience this evening against Penn State Berks. Multiple runs for the Hawks in the first, fifth, and ninth innings, paired with just one earned run allowed by the pitching staff allowed Hilbert to improve to 3-1 on the season with a 9-2 victory.
Jack Duffek,
Griffin McAndrews, and
Nolan Evans each provided a multiple-run scoring knock, while
Joe Reitebach went six innings, allowing just two earned runs, while striking out nine to earn the win in his first outing with the Hawks.
How it Happened
- The Hawks got on the board early this evening as Garrett Brink traded an out for a run to score Joey Haynes, who led the game off with a double. Later on in the top of the first, Jack Duffek ripped a double to center to bring home Harley Hoag and Dustin Hendrix and give Hilbert a 3-0 lead after the away half of the first.
- The Lions were able to pull a run back in the bottom of the frame off an error, before Reitebach sent the final two batters of the inning down looking to limit the damage.
- After Logan Hoyt singled and stole second to put himself in scoring position in the top of the second, Hendrix restored the three-run lead as his second hit in as many innings made it a 4-1 game.
- The score remained the same after scoreless third and fourth innings, before Hilbert opened the game up in the top of the fifth with their second three-run frame of the contest. All three runs came off the bat of McAndrews who cleared the bases with a two-out double to make it a 7-1 advantage.
- Hilbert got a trio of hits in the top of the sixth looking to add to the lead, but a pair of outs on the base paths, and a flyout ended the threat. In the home half, Reitebach continued to cruise as he ended his outing with a fifth-straight scoreless frame, and a pair of strikeouts to wrap up the quality start.
- Neither team changed the scoreboard in the seventh or eighth inning, before the Hawks added two more runs in the top of the ninth. Kyle Borrello and Alex Ellison each walked, and a double steal brought Nolan Evans up to the plate with two men in scoring position. An Evans single scored both Borrello and Ellison and extended the lead to 9-1.
- Penn State Berks added a run in the bottom of the ninth, but the Lions ran out of outs quickly after as Andrew Cole wrapped up the Hilbert win immediately after entering the contest.
