Hawks Take Down the Lynx in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Hilbert College Baseball took on Lesley University this morning at the Ripken Classic in the first ever matchup between the Hawks and the Lynx. In a seven-inning contest, Hilbert improved to 5-4 on the spring break trip with a 7-3 victory.

Jacob Kim-Kubiak (W, 4 IP, 2 ER, 4 K) and Brendan Walsh (S, 3 IP, 1 ER, 2 K) split the outing on the mound and limited the Lesley offense to runs in just two innings this morning.

Garrett Brink and Harley Hoag each recorded a pair of RBIs, while Alex Ellison and Nolan Evans led the Hawks with multi-hit games.

How it Happened
  • Kim-Kubiak made quick work of the Lynx in the top of the first, but Kyle Borrello's leadoff single would be the only Hilbert baserunner of the frame as the game remained 0-0 after one inning.
  • Lesley stranded a leadoff single of its own in the top of the second, before Hilbert opened up a 3-0 advantage in the home half of the inning. Brink began the scoring with a sacrifice fly that scored Jack Duffek, and a Lynx balk brought home Evans to double the lead. John Watson extended the lead to three with a double.
  • A pair of two-out RBI singles for Lesley in the top of the third made it a one-run game, but the Hawks would answer with four more runs in the bottom of the frame.
  • Harley Hoag restored the three-run lead for Hilbert with a two RBI double, before RBI hits from Brink and Alex Ellison allowed the Hawks to exit the inning up 7-2.
  • The teams left the scoreboard unchanged over the next three innings, as the duo of Kim-Kubiak and Walsh cruised through the middle of the contest.
  • The Lynx got one run back in the top of the seventh to make it 7-3, but the game would end that way as a groundout with two men on denied a Lesley comeback effort.
BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Watson, Ellison, Evans, and Hoag each ripped a double in the game, while Kim-Kubiak and Walsh kept the Lynx without an extra base hit.
  • Duffek and Evans each scored a pair of runs, Joey Haynes reached base three times, and Woodley Fisher and Ellison each stole a bag.
Up Next:

The Hawks wrap up play at the Ripken Classic tomorrow when the team takes on RPI in a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to begin at 3 pm at Ebbets Field.
