Late-Game Rallies Fall Short For Hawks

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Hilbert College Baseball battled in their third doubleheader while competing in the Ripken Experience.  After splitting their earlier series, the Hawks suffered back-to-back defeats (9-inning 6-4, and 10-6 extra inning)  and slipped to 5-6 at the conclusion of the nine-day classic.

Hilbert held a 4-2 lead heading into the 8th inning of the opening game but a four-run explosion by the Engineers secured the 6-4 win.  The Hawks rallied in the nightcap and knotted the game at 6-all, yet WPI banged in four more runs in the 8th for the win.

Game One: WPI 6 – Hilbert 4 – 9 innings
Game Two: WPI 10 – Hilbert 6 – 8 innings

GAME ONE:
  • WPI got on the board first when a single through the left side plated a runner from second base.
  • The teams split scoreless second and third innings before the Hawks pounded in four runs in by the middle of the 6th. WPI trimmed the margin in the 5th inning, but the Hawks added two more in the 6th to build a 4-2 lead.
  • John Watson and Joey Haynes each singled and moved around the bags off a Nolan Evans at bat and Jack Duffek's hit to the outfield while the Engineers scored off a triple to right center, setting the 3-2 score at the top of the 6th.
  • Garrett Brink walked before Griffin McAndrews' double down the right field line set the table for Haynes to plate Brink and McAndrews to score off a wild pitch.
  • The Hawks went 6 up, 6 down over the next two innings while WPI stacked four runs together off three hits and one error in the bottom of the 8th to take the lead.
  • Duffek was the lone Hawk to connect in the 9th resulting in the loss.
Duffek led the way with three hits while McAndrews earned the only multi-bag hit.

Nolan Evans went seven innings, allowed five hits, two earned runs and struck out nine. Matthew Whelan took his first loss of the season giving up three hits and one walk today.

GAME TWO:
  • Hilbert played catch-up in the night cap, falling behind 5-2 through three innings
  • The Hawks manufactured their two runs in the 2nd off short hits and speed on the bases. Dustin Hendrix stole two bases and sprinted home off a throwing error and Harley Hoag, after stealing second base, was send home off John Watson's hit up the middle.
  • Alex Ellison tacked a Hilbert run in the bottom of the 4th, and, with two outs in the 5th, the Hawks manufactured two more runs to trim the lead.  Duffek continued his hot swings with another single, followed by Hendrix and Ellison. Back-to-back walks scored the next two Hilbert runs, setting the 6-5 score.
  • Hilbert's defense showed up big time in the 7th as they turned a double play and forced a groundout which allowed them to continue their offensive push.  After Duffek opened the inning with a walk, he advanced to second and then scored off a throwing error by WPI's catcher and knotted the game at 6-all to send the game to extra innings.
  • The Engineers engineered four runs in the top of the 8th then turned away three of the four Hawk batters in the bottom half for the victory.
