Hawks Split Doubleheader with Penn College

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Hilbert College Baseball took on Penn College this afternoon in a pair of games at the Ripken Classic. After a doubleheader split, the Hawks remain at .500 this season as the team sits at 4-4.

A sixth-inning Penn College run made the difference in the 9-8 first game, while Hilbert scored early and often in a 14-3 game two victory to even up the day.

Game One: Hilbert 8 – Penn College 9
Game Two: Hilbert 14 – Penn College 3

Game One:
  • The teams split scoreless first and second innings before combining for nine runs in the third. The Wildcats opened the scoring with three in the top of the frame, before the Hawks left in inning with a three-run lead after a six-run effort.
  • Kyle Borrello's solo home run started the Hilbert scoring, and Griffin McAndrews (two), Harley Hoag (two), and Nolan Evans each recorded RBIs to give the Hawks a 6-3 advantage after three innings.
  • The game's next five runs belonged to Penn as the Wildcats made it 6-5 after the fourth, before adding three runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead.
  • McAndrews added a third RBI in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to one run, but the Hawks were unable to do any more damage in the frame.
  • The Wildcats restored the two-run advantage their next trip up, and held the Hilbert offense scoreless in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-7 lead into the final inning.
  • With two outs and two men on, Harley Hoag singled to make it a one-run game and put the tying run on third, but a lineout ended the contest.
McAndrews and Hoag led the way offensively with three RBIs each on a combined 3-6 effort from the bottom of the lineup.

Ryan Hilton, Alex Rumfola, and David Alessi split the game on the mound for the Hawks with the trio allowing five earned runs and combining to strikeout four batters.

Game Two:
  • Hilbert wasted no time getting the bats going in the second game of the afternoon, as the Hawks scored three runs in each of the first two innings. Dustin Hendrix and Nolan Evans each recorded an RBI before Jack Duffek sent one over the fence in left to end the first inning scoring for Hilbert.
  • The Wildcats added a pair in the bottom of the frame, but the Hawks answered back with three more in the top of the second to make it 6-2. Hendrix and Duffek scored their second runner in as many innings and Harley Hoag brough Garrett Brink home with a single.
  • The teams took a break from scoring in the third, before Hilbert added three more runs in the top of the fourth to extend the lead. Alex Ellison, Reed Lesmeister, and Kyle Borrello did the damage on a single, sacrifice fly, and walk, respectively.
  • The teams traded runs over the next two half innings and swapped scoreless sixths to send the game into the seventh with the Hawks up 10-3. Hilbert would add four more insurance runs in the frame to put the game out of reach.
In his first start, Jase Burdon went the distance to earn the win for the Hawks. The freshman pitcher allowed just two earned runs over seven innings of work, while striking out seven Wildcats.

Six Hawks recorded multiple RBIs in the contest as Borrello (three), Hendrix (two), Duffek (two), Ellison (two), Lesmeister (two), and Hoag (two) each brought in multiple runs.
