Hawks Suffer Setback Against Bridgewater State After Big Eighth Inning From the Bears

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Hilbert College Baseball dropped to 3-3 on this season after suffering a 14-8 defeat against Bridgewater State University this afternoon. The Hawks held an 8-5 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth, but a nine-run explosion from the Bears in the frame flipped the script on this one.

Dustin Hendrix hit the first home run of the year for Hilbert as his three-run blast tied the game in the top of the third. Hendrix reached base twice in the contest and led the Hawks with three RBIs.

Dylan Moorhouse went six innings for Hilbert in his second start of the campaign. After allowing runs in each of the first three innings, Moorhouse finished his outing with three straight scoreless frames.

How it Happened
  • The Bears took advantage of a slow offensive start for the Hawks as Bridgewater State held the Hilbert offense scoreless in the first two frames, while getting three runs of their own for an early 3-0 advantage.
  • The second time through the order saw Hilbert pick up the offense and eventually tie the game. With two outs, Kyle Borrello (hbp) and Garrett Brink (single) each reached base, before Hendrix's first career long ball evened the score at three all.
  • The Bears responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, but Hilbert put up a second straight three-spot in the top of the fourth to take its first lead of the game.
  • Alex Ellison and Logan Hoyt each recorded an RBI to tie the game, and an error by the Bears allowed Hilbert to take a 6-5 lead after 3.5 innings.
  • Moorhouse began to settle in after the hot offensive start from Bridgewater, as the Hawks still held a 6-5 advantage heading into the sixth. Borrello singled to bring Home LoBello to open up the first multi-run lead for the Hawks.
  • Following a scoreless seventh, Hilbert grabbed another run off an error in the top of the eighth as the Hawks looked to be in control with a three-run lead and just six Bridgewater outs remaining.
  • However, the bats woke up for the Bears in the bottom of the eighth in a big way. A ten-hit, nine-run frame made it a 14-8 game and gave Bridgewater the biggest lead of the contest heading into the final frame.
  • A blank top of the ninth from Hilbert ended the game and dropped the Hawks to .500 with their second straight defeat at the Ripken Experience.
