Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Andrew Loveless

Late Game Run Not Enough as Hawks Fall to Celtics

HAMBURG, NY – Hilbert College Women's Basketball Carlow University this evening in the second conference matchup between the Hawks and the Celtics this season.

Hilbert held a three-point advantage after the first quarter, but a 30-12 Carlow second frame would end up being too much for the Hawks to overcome in the 65-53 defeat.

The Hawks had four players contribute at least eight points, led by freshman Kylie Morgan's career day. In 39 minutes of action, she posted personal bests in points (15), made field goals (6), free throws made (three) and attempted (four), rebounds (eleven), and assists (two). Eight of Morgan's eleven rebounds came on the offensive glass, led to a 14-6 advantage in second chance points for the Hawks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Hilbert opened the scoring in the game with a Kelsey Schlagenhauf jumper and used another Schlagenhauf bucket to take an 11-10 lead.
  • After Carlow knotted the game at 13-all, Jessee Jonathan scored three straight points to give the Hawks a 16-13 lead after ten minutes.
  • The Celtics opened the second quarter on a 16-5 fun to flip the script, and scored the last nine points of the half to take a 43-28 lead into the break.
  • The offense slowed down out of halftime as the teams combined for just 17 points in the third quarter. Schlagenhauf, Morgan, Mackenzie Catan, and Kayla Johnson each added points in the quarter for the Hawks.
  • Hilbert strung together eight straight points in the final frame to cut the Carlow lead to nine points, but time ran out on the Hawks' comeback effort as the Celtics took this AMCC matchup 65-53.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Schlagenhauf nearly joined Morgan with a double-double, as she added ten points and eight rebounds.
  • Johnson (eight points, five rebounds, three assists, one block), and Catan (seven points, eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks) contributed on both ends for the Hawks, while Jonathan had her best shooting day for Hilbert, going 3-3 from the field and 2-2 from three for a career-high nine points.
