HAMBURG, N.Y. – Behind a balanced offensive attack and a dominant effort on the glass, Hilbert Men's Basketball earned its first win of the 2025–26 season with a 111–99 victory over Covenant College on Saturday afternoon inside the Brad Hafner Recreation Center.
The Hawks (1–1) shot a scorching 60.5 percent from the field and controlled the boards with a 60 - 40 rebounding advantage, fending off a strong effort from the visiting 0-2 Scots who traveled to WNY from the great state of Georgia. Hilbert's offense was clicking early and never let up, posting 61 first-half points and finishing with six players scoring nine or more.
Senior forward
Larry Morse led the way with a game-high 24 points and 12 rebounds, his second double-double in two days. Morse went 10-for-15 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 at the line. Junior guard
Ne'Sean Fowlks continued his efficient start to the year with 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting, also adding 12 rebounds and two blocks.
Sonny Williams turned in a standout all-around performance, totaling 17 points, eight assists, six rebounds, and five steals, while
Jaden Mitchell scored 18 points and handed out two assists.
Ari Jones added 14 points, and
Jayden Montgomery contributed seven assists and six boards.
Hilbert built a 61–54 halftime lead thanks to red-hot 59 percent shooting in the opening frame and maintained control throughout the second half, converting 62 percent of its shots after the break. The Hawks dominated the interior with 56 points in the paint and added 38 fast-break points to stay comfortably ahead despite Covenant's 99-point outburst.
The Hawks' unselfish play was evident in their 29 assists on 46 made field goals, compared to Covenant's 19 assists. Hilbert also capitalized on second-chance opportunities, scoring 21 points off offensive rebounds.
Covenant was led by Luuk Dusek's 15 points off the bench, while Pierce Smith added 14. The Scots finished with 55 bench points and 28 fast-break points but couldn't match Hilbert's efficiency.
Waynesburg University stormed back in the night cap, after trailing 43-29 so St. John Fisher at the break. The Yellow Jackets pushed the pace in the second half, got the Cardinals in foul trouble and took their first lead late in regulation. The game went to overtime tied at 69 each. Waynesburg outscored Fisher 6-4 in the final frame and earned their first Hawks Against Hunger Tournament title in two appearances. Fisher, who was 5-0 before today's outcome, fell in their first Tip Off title game in Hamburg.
Larry Morse joined Covenant's Pierce Smith, St. John Fisher's Jonathan McCaffrey, and Waynesburg's Jackson Rhodes and well as Scott Bilovus on the All-Tournament team.
The Hawks look to build off their offensive punch today as they prepare for a non-conference game just down Rt 90 at Fredonia State Wednesday, November 12th.
