HAMBURG, N.Y. — Hilbert College Women's Basketball opened its season on Friday afternoon against Alfred University at home in the Hafner Recreation Center. The Hawks came out strong, but ultimately fell to the Saxons, 63-31.
The Hawks jumped out to an early 6-2 lead after
Mia Aldaya and
Hailey Alba each connected from deep, but the Saxons used a nine-point run to take the lead late in the opening quarter.
Bianca Iten added a late jumper for the Hawks to make it 13-8 Alfred after ten minutes of play.
Hilbert continued to battle in the second quarter, as
LaDasia Leak (two points) Iten (four points) and Alba (three points) all scored in the frame, but Alfred connected on a pair of threes and a trio of inside buckers to push their lead to 26–17 by halftime.
Coming out of the break, Alfred outscored the Hawks 21–8 in the third quarter to create separation. Aldaya, Leak, and Sabala all added points for the Hawks in the quarter.
The visitors continued to shoot well in the final frame, hitting four times from beyond the arc to close out the 63-31 victory.
Bianca Iten led Hilbert with 8 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 steals in 21 minutes of action.
Hailey Alba added 6 points and 2 steals, while
LaDasia Leak and
Mia Aldaya each contributed 5 points.
Learsi Sabala pulled down a team-high 9 rebounds, helping Hilbert to a 56–55 advantage on the glass. The Hawks' defense recorded seven steals and three blocks while committing just six fouls.
