Battaglia Records First Two Career Goals in 5-2 loss to Albertus Magnus

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College Women's Hockey hosted Albertus Magnus this afternoon at the Nike Base for the second straight day of UCHC action between the Hawks and the Falcons. Hilbert held a 2-1 lead late in the second period, but four unanswered goals from Albertus Magnus saw the visitors take a 5-2 victory.

Hilbert was led offensively by freshman Victoria Battaglia, who scored both Hawks goals, the first two tallies of her collegiate career. Alexis Cunningham, Caitlin Conrad, and Kelsey Fuller each recorded assists on Battaglia's second period goals.

Between the pipes, Brook Thompson gave the Hawks another outstanding performance, making 61 stops including a pair of 22-save frames.

After Thompson stopped the first eleven Falcon shots, Albertus Magnus opened the scoring halfway through the opening frame. Eleven more saves from the Hilbert goaltender would send the Hawks into the locker room down just one goal after 20 minutes of play.

Out of the break, Battaglia struck just 21 seconds into the second period to tie the game at 1–1 with the first goal of her career. Following a cross-ice pass from Conrad, Cunningham fired a shot from that point that Battaglia deflected into the back of the net to knot the game.

Less than ten minutes later, Battaglia would double her career goal mark after a great effort from Fuller. The sophomore forward stripped a Falcon defender after a relentless forecheck, before she found Battaglia open in the slot, who beat her defender and found the top corner of the net to give the Hawks the lead.

However, Albertus Magnus responded late in the second with an unassisted tally that sent the game into the intermission even at 2–2. The Falcons carried that momentum into the third period, scoring the eventual game-winner at 11:58 before adding two more goals, including a shorthanded empty-netter in the final minute.

In the loss, Hilbert played a strong defensive game with 21 blocked shots, led by four apiece from Battaglia and Victoria Koenig.
