Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Kara Rehbaum

Hilbert's Fourth-Quarter Push Falls Short in Loss to Wolves

HAMBURG, N.Y. - Despite trailing by double digits most of the  game, a spirited Hilbert women's basketball team fought to the final horn before falling 65-57 to Keuka College on Saturday afternoon at the Brad Hafner Recreation Center.

The Hawks used a massive fourth-quarter rally, outscoring the Wolves 20–12, but that early deficit proved too much to overcome as Hilbert moved to 0–5 on the season.

Learsi Sabala delivered her strongest outing of the year, pouring in 22 points on an efficient 10-of-13 shooting, while adding three steals and two assists. Kayla Johnson also gave Hilbert a major boost, scoring 15 points and knocking down a trio of key second-half buckets to spark the comeback attempt.

LaDasia Leak added seven points and three assists, while Jessee Jonathan supplied valuable minutes off the bench with six points and six rebounds.

After shooting just 3-of-13 in the opening quarter, Hilbert battled uphill for much of the afternoon. Keuka built an 18–9 lead after the first and extended it to 36–20 by halftime behind efficient shooting and strong interior play.

The Hawks responded after the break, shooting 53.8% in the third quarter and continuing to trim the deficit throughout the fourth. A late surge, capped by a Sabala three-pointer and a pair of defensive stops, brought Hilbert within single digits, but Keuka's composure at the line sealed the outcome.

Keuka (4–2) featured a balanced scoring attack led by Lillian Mullen's 15 points and Brooke Burd's 12-point, 10-rebound double-double. The Wolves shot 45.8% from the field, converting timely free throws (17-of-23) and committing just nine turnovers.

Team Notes
  • Hilbert shot 42.3% overall – their best effort in November - including 50% in the fourth quarter.
  • The Hawks forced 17 turnovers, turning them into 24 points, but Keuka's early offensive efficiency made the difference.
  • Hilbert had more looks at the hoop today as a result of limiting their turnovers to a season low number.
  • Hilbert's bench contributed 10 points, highlighted by Jonathan's all-around performance.
