PAXTON, MA – For a second straight day, Hilbert College Women's Hockey took on Anna Maria College at Buffone Skating Arena this evening. The Hawks found the back of the net to open the scoring in both the first and third periods, but four unanswered goals by the Amcats led to a 5-2 defeat for Hilbert.
After goalie
Jewely Monford stopped the first three shots of the game, Hilbert fired a trio of shots on goal of their own on the game's first powerplay.
Anna Faulkner (2) and
Megan Moceri recorded the shots for Hilbert with the Hawks looking to open the scoring.
Less than a minute after the first Anna Maria penalty ended, the Amcats occupied the box once again, giving Hilbert a second chance to break the ice in the game. Seconds before the 5-on-4 opportunity was set to expire, the Hawks did exactly that as Faulkner crashed the net and forced the puck over the line to make it a 1-0 game. Moceri and
Izabelle Wagner collected the assists on the goal 8:38 into the game.
However, the Amcats would collect a powerplay goal of their own to answer the Faulkner goal with 1:17 left in the first period as the scoreboard would read 1-1 when the teams went to the locker room.
Hilbert looked to open the scoring for a second-straight period with the first two attempts at goal of the second, but it would be the hosts that grabbed the 2-1 lead just 2:31 into the middle frame. The second period saw two more goals, both scored by Anna Maria, and the Amcats held a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Needing a spark down three goals in the game's final period, Hilbert turned to
Kaitlin Cowie,
Anna Faulkner, and
Kelsey Fuller to provide the offense on a set faceoff play. Faulkner won the draw to Cowie, who found Fuller in front of the net for her first goal of the season and the first of her career to cut the lead to 4-2 11:34 into the third period.
Hilbert looked to add to the Fuller goal with two more shots on net in the period, but after both were turned aside by Anna Maria goalie, Stevie Levesque, the Amcats recorded an insurance tally with 2:12 to go to wrap up the 5-2 victory.
GAME NOTES
- Monford made her first appearance of the season in between the pipes, making 45 saves.
- Faulkner recorded a goal and an assist on eight shots on goal while also adding five blocked shots and 25 faceoff wins on 33 draws.
- Fuller's third period tally marked the first goal of her collegiate career.
