PAXTON, MA – Hilbert College Women's Hockey traveled to Buffone Skate Arena to take on Anna Maria College this evening. After an even opening 20 minutes on the scoreboard, the hosting Amcats used late goals in the second and third periods to separate themselves from the Hawks as Hilbert fell 5-0.
Despite the scoreboard remaining unchanged after the first period, the game's first twenty minutes saw plenty of action. In the Hilbert defensive zone, goalie
Tia Card was called upon to make 21 stops in the frame while blanking the Anna Maria offense. In the other end, the Hawks earned a pair of powerplay opportunities but were unable to capitalize on any of their four shots while playing with the extra skater.
When play resumed in the second period, the Amcats continued the offensive pressure, with Card adding three more saves in the opening three minutes. However, the fourth shot of the period, and 25
th of the game for Anna Maria, found the back of the net to give the hosts the 1-0 lead 2:35 into the middle frame.
Hilbert worked to earn four more powerplays in the period, generating nine shots on the opportunities, but solid penalty-killing from the Amcats powered a late goal and a 2-0 advantage heading into the third period.
Hilbert looked to get back into the game in the final 20 minutes, but an Anna Maria tally 9:09 into the period provided the Amcats with an insurance goal. Anna Maria would add on a pair of goals in the final minute of the game to extend the lead and leave the ice with a 5-0 win.
