Baseball Improves to 5-3 in the AMCC with Two Shutouts Over Bradford

BRADFORD, PA – Hilbert College Baseball traveled to Bradford this afternoon for a midweek Allegheny Mountain Collegiate doubleheader against the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Panthers. The Hawks used solid pitching all day to earn a pair of 6-0 wins and a much-needed conference sweep to move up to third in the AMCC.

Starting pitcher Dylan Moorhouse pitched five scoreless innings to earn his fifth win of the season, while John Riviere-Vejas and Jairo Santos combined for five of Hilbert's seven hits in the game, as the Hawks won game one 6-0.

Four different Hawks recorded multiple hits and Spencer Harford threw seven scoreless innings in another 6-0 victory in game two.

Game 1:

Neither team could get much offense going to start this one, as the zeroes remained on the scoreboard after the second innings wrapped up.

Hilbert broke the game open in the top of the third with four runs for a 4-0 lead. After opening the inning with a walk and hit respectively, Griffin McAndrews and John Riviere-Vejas both scored on a Bradford error. An RBI single from Jairo Santos, and an RBI double from Billy LoBello completed the four-run third.

After a scoreless fourth, Hilbert added two more runs to the lead in the top of the fifth to make it 6-0. Santos brought home Nolan Evans with a double for his second RBI of the game, and then came around to score on a Konner Hauck RBI ground out.

David Alessi, Johnray Hasfurter, and Brendan Walsh split the duties on the mound in the final two innings to preserve the shutout and the conference win.

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Moorhouse (5-2) earned his fifth win on the mound for the Hawks after a scoreless five-inning three hit performance.
  • Santos (2-4, 2 RBI, 1 2B, 1 R) and Riviere-Vejas (3-4, 1 R) led the way on offense for Hilbert.
Game 2:

After a scoreless first, Nolan Evans led off the top of the second with his second home run of the season to open the scoring. Jairo Santos followed up the long ball with a triple and then came home to double the lead on an error.

With Harford cruising through the Bradford lineup, the game remained 2-0 until the Hawks added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning.

John Riviere-Vejas led off the fifth with a double, and Jack Duffek's double brought him home to make it a 3-0 game. Santos scored his second run of the game on an error to extend it to 4-0 in the top of the sixth.

RBIs from Santos and Konner Hauck in the top of the seventh tacked on two more runs to the Hilbert lead to make it 6-0.

After Harford went seven shutout innings allowing just two hits, Brennen Hediger and Blaine Morgan split the final two innings on the mound with scoreless outings of their own to give Hilbert a second straight 6-0 win and an AMCC sweep to improve to 5-3 in the conference.

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Santos once again had a standout performance at the plate going 4-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Riviere-Vejas, Duffek, and Evans each had multiple hits in the game for the Hawks.
  • Harford earned his third win of the season with his seven inning, two hit, and five strikeout performance.
