PITTSBURGH, PA – Hilbert College Baseball traveled to Pittsburgh this afternoon for the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference games of the week against La Roche University. The Hawks extended their win streak to five games, and head coach
Drew Fittry earned his 100
th career win in a two-game sweep over the Redhawks.
After trailing for most of the game, Hilbert scored four runs in the final two innings of game one to come back and win 5-3.
The Hawks jumped out to an early lead in game two and never gave it up in a 6-3 victory to complete the sweep.
Game 1:
La Roche got their leadoff runner aboard and around to score in both the first and second innings to get out to a 2-0 advantage in this important AMCC contest.
The Hawks would cut the lead in half when
Konner Hauck was brought home on an
Alex Ellison double in the top of the third. Hauck led off the inning with a single and stole second to put himself in scoring position.
Back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the third saw the Redhawks grab another run to regain the two-run lead and make it a 3-1 game.
Hilbert starter
Ronald Mort shut down the fourth and fifth innings to keep his team in it. Mort finished the game with five innings pitched, two earned runs allowed on six hits, and one strikeout.
After having only one run to show for six hits in the first five innings, the Hawks bats strung together seven hits in the final two innings of the game to come back and take the lead. Ellison's second RBI of the game scored
Billy LoBello to make it 3-2, and
John Riviere-Vejas' two RBI single brought home Ellison and Hauck to give the Hawks a 4-3 lead after six innings.
A
Nolan Evans solo shot in the top of the seventh inning extended the lead and gave
Brendan Walsh all the insurance he needed to pitch a scoreless seventh for his fourth save of the season.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- Riviere-Vejas, Patrick Whelan, LoBello, Hauck, and Ellison each recorded multiple hits in the game.
- Evans' seventh run home run was his second long ball in as many games to give him three on the season.
- Mort earned his third win of the season on the mound in five innings of work.
- David Alessi and Brendan Walsh each pitched a scoreless inning in relief to preserve the victory.
Game 2:
After trailing for much of game one, Hilbert made sure to come out and grab the lead early in game two. An RBI double from
Nolan Evans, and an RBI single from
Billy LoBello saw the Hawks jump out to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first.
Hilbert waited until the fifth inning to add to the lead, but thanks to the efforts of
Ryan Hilton in his first career start, the Redhawks remained off the scoreboard in the first five innings of the contest.
Nolan Evans tripled in the top of the fifth, and
Jack Duffek singled to bring him home for the 3-0 lead.
La Roche was able to score once in the bottom of the sixth, but
David Alessi made sure they did not get any more runs after coming in with runners on first and second and no outs.
Hilbert responded with three runs in the top of the seventh to regain a three-run advantage.
John Watson and Riviere-Vejas led off the inning with back-to-back doubles with Watson coming home on a Riviere-Vejas RBI. An error scored Riviere-Vejas, and a
Nolan Evans sacrifice fly brought home
Jairo Santos, who singled earlier in the inning, for a 6-1 lead.
The Hawks were kept off the scoreboard the rest of the game and La Roche added a run each in the bottom of the eighth and ninth, but the comeback bid fell short with
Brendan Walsh finishing the game for his second save of the day.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- Riviere-Vejas (3-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB), Evans (2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 2B, 1 3B), and Konner Hauck (2-3, 2 BB) led the offense of the Hawks.
- Hilton earned his second career win, going five innings allowing one run in his first career start.
- David Alessi pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief, Nolan Evans threw the seventh and eighth innings without allowing an earned run, and Walsh pitched the ninth to earn the save.

Hilbert will host Mount Aloysius at the Elk Street Complex on Saturday, April 20
th in a doubleheader beginning at 12 pm. The Mounties come into the games as the number one seed in the AMCC at 8-2. With a sweep, the second seeded Hawks (7-3) would claim the top spot in the conference.
