Baseball Splits AMCC Doubleheader with Penn State Behrend

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College Baseball hosted Penn State Behrend for an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader this afternoon on campus. The Hawks and the Lions split the wins today to keep each team at .500 in the conference.

Consistent offense and steady pitching allowed Behrend to take game one, while three innings of three runs or more led to a Hilbert win in game two.

Game 1:

Behrend opened the scoring in the top of the first with a pair of RBI singles to jump out to an early 2-0 advantage.

John Riviere-Vejas doubled to bring home Nolan Evans in the bottom of the first to cut the lead in half.

Runs in the second, third, and fourth innings for the visitors extended the Behrend lead to 5-1.

Hilbert pulled a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning when Evans was brought home for the second time, this time on a Jairo Santos single.

The teams traded runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and played a scoreless seventh inning to complete the 7-4 Penn State Behrend victory.

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Nolan Evans reached base three times, all from HBPs.
  • Riviere-Vejas was the only Hawks to record multiple hits and RBIs, with two of each.
  • Dylan Moorhouse started the game on the mound for Hilbert going six innings, allowing six earned runs.
  • Ryan Hilton pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Game 2:

Hilbert started game two hot, scoring three runs in the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Jairo Santos, Billy LoBello, and Griffin McAndrews all recorded RBIs in the first inning.

Santos' second RBI of the game extended the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning.

Behrend got a run back in the top of the third, but Hilbert tacked on four more runs in the bottom half. An RBI single from Riviere-Vejas, a 2 RBI double from Jack Duffek, and a wild pitch did the damage for the Hawks to make it an 8-1 game.

Behrend made it 8-2 in the fourth, but Riviere-Vejas' second RBI of the game in the bottom of the inning restored the seven-run lead.

The Lions looked to make the game interesting with two runs in the fifth but the final five runs of the game belonged to Hilbert to conclude the game in the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule.

Alex Ellison and Riviere-Vejas each recorded RBIs in the sixth inning, while an RBI from Konner Hauck and a 2 RBI single from Billy LoBello ended things in the seventh.

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Riviere-Vejas once again ignited the Hilbert offense going 4/5 with a triple and 3 RBIs.
  • Joining Riviere-Vejas with multiple RBIs were LoBello (3), Duffek (2) and Santos (2).
  • Spencer Harford earned the win on the mound with 4.1 innings pitched and seven strikeouts.

Up Next:

The Hawks are back in action at home on Saturday, April 13th for a nonconference doubleheader against SUNY Poly. Game one first pitch is set for 1 pm at FSSJ field on campus.
