MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Hilbert College Baseball extended its' winning streak to three games this afternoon with a walk-off win over Rivier University.
Despite holding an 8-2 lead after seven innings, the Hawks did not clinch the win until two outs were gone in the bottom of the ninth inning.
How it Happened
The Hawks took control of the game early on, grabbing the first three runs of the contest.
Jack Duffek got things going in the second inning with an RBI single that scored
Konner Hauck. Hilbert brought two more runners home in the fourth inning with an
Alex Ellison bases-loaded walk, and a Duffek sacrifice fly that brought home Hauck once again.
Starting pitcher
Spencer Harford was on cruise control early, not allowing a hit in the first five innings of the game to keep Rivier off the board. However, a pair of hits by the Raiders in the top of the sixth, including a two-run homerun, cut the Hilbert lead to 3-2.
The Hawks responded with the game's next five runs to take a commanding 8-2 lead in the seventh inning. Three runs in the sixth inning thanks to a
Nolan Evans two RBI single and a
Dustin Hendrix RBI single, as well as two runs in the seventh from an
Alex Ellison run on a throw to second, and a
Billy LoBello RBI single gave Hilbert its' biggest lead of the game as they lead by six.
Rivier was not done just yet, as a five-run eighth inning gave the Raiders life heading into the ninth inning. The momentum carried over into the top of the ninth when an RBI ground out tied the game up at 9-9.
Hilbert quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, needing just one run to win the game. After two Hawks struck out,
Jairo Santos stepped up to the plate and sent a single into right field to bring
Trent White home and secure the win for the Hawks.
