MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Hilbert College Baseball continue its' hot start to the season today with a 9-7 victory over Bridgewater State. For the seventh time in nine games, the Hawks set the tone by scoring in the first inning.
Runs in five innings, including four in the sixth inning led to a second straight victory for the Hawks, and the team's fifth win over spring break.
How it Happened
The game's first two runs belonged to the Hawks after
Nolan Evans' RBI double and
Dustin Hendrix's sacrifice fly scored
John Riviere-Vejas and Bill LoBello in the top of the first to give Hilbert the early 2-0 lead. However, the Bears got two runs of their own when they came to the plate in the first inning to tie the game at two.
Hilbert responded with the next two runs of the game on a
Konner Hauck RBI double in the second and an
Alex Ellison RBI single in the third inning to restore the two-run lead. Like they did in the first inning, Bridgewater once again had an answer to the Hilber runs as they got two runs of their own in the bottom of the third to knot the game at four.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning for each team, Hilbert broke the game open in the sixth with four runs. A pair of Hawks scored on wild pitches, LoBello doubled down the left field line to bring home
Emmanuel McClain, and Hendrix grabbed his second RBI of the game as his single brought in LoBello to extend the lead to 8-4.
Bridgewater State worked to chip away at the Hilbert lead with a run in the sixth and a pair of runs in the seventh to make it an 8-7 game.
Hauck's second RBI of the game in the top of the ninth sent
Brendan Walsh (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R) back onto the mound with an extra run to work with as he closed out the game for Hilbert and earned his second save of the season.
