Hawks Take Down Golden Tornadoes 10-9

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Hilbert College Baseball faced off against the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes this afternoon and the Hawks came out with a 10-9 victory after a back-and-forth contest.

The weather forced a slight delay, but when the two teams got going in the afternoon, there was no shortage of offense, especially late in the game.

How it Happened

Hilbert grabbed to first run of the game in the top of the first inning when Patrick Whelan was able to cross the plate on an error. Geneva answered right back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly.

Geneva got the next run of the game in the bottom of the second, but Hilbert responded with runs in the third and fourth innings thanks to RBI singles from Jairo Santos, Jack Duffek and Dustin Hendrix to take a 4-2 lead.

The Golden Tornadoes kept it close as they scored a pair of runs to knot the game at 4 apiece after six innings.

The teams each scored two runs in the eighth inning to make it a 6-6 game. The Hawks got their runs off of an RBI triple from Hendrix, and an RBI double from Griffin McAndrews.

A four-run ninth inning helped Hilbert take their largest lead of the game heading into the bottom of the ninth. John Riviere-Vejas brought home Konner Hauck with a triple, and then scored on a passed ball to make it 8-6. McAndrews extended the lead with his second and third RBIs of the game on a double to right field to make it 10-6

Geneva made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs but Brennen Hediger was able to wrap up the game and get off the field with the win.
