MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Hilbert College Baseball fell 3-1 today to the Neumann University Knights to drop to 5-2 on the season. One day removed from scoring 28 runs in a doubleheader sweep, the Hawks could not carry the offense over against the Neumann pitching staff.
Three runs in the fifth inning would be all the Knights needed as they held Hilbert to five hits in the contest. The Hawks responded with a run in the seventh, but it was not enough as the Knights held on for the victory.
How it Happened
Despite each side advancing a runner to third base by the time the third inning ended, the scoreboard still read 0-0 heading into the fifth inning. Each team found ways to get out of jams and keep the other off the scoreboard until Neumann opened the scoring in the fifth inning.
A pair of errors by the Hilbert defense opened the door for the Knights, as three unearned runs crossed the plate for Neumann in the top half of the fifth
Hilbert got an unearned run of their own in the seventh, as
Billy LoBello reached base on an error and was brought home on a
Dustin Hendrix sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 game.
However, the pitching of Neumann would not allow the Hawks to get any closer, as five of the final six Hilbert batters struck out to end the game.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- Patrick Whelan, Nolan Evans, Alex Ellison, Jairo Santos, and Billy LoBello each recorded hits for the Hawks, and Dustin Hendrix recorded the lone RBI in the game.
