MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Hilbert College Baseball played the University of Valley Forge today in a doubleheader that saw 52 total runs in just 14 innings of play. The Hawks won a tight game one 8-7 and followed it up with an offensive explosion to win game two 20-17.
Game one saw some back-and-forth scoring that had Hilbert down late, but a big three run sixth inning from the Hawks allowed the team to get back into the win column.
The Hawks ripped off ten first inning runs in game two to set the tone for what would be an offensive showdown. Valley Forge would get runs in every inning but the fifth, but a nine run bottom half of the sixth gave the Hawks an insurmountable lead that ultimately lead to victory and the doubleheader sweep.
Game 1:
After a scoreless first inning for each team, Hilbert opened the scoring in the top of the second on a
Jack Duffek double that brought home a pair of Hawks. A
Nolan Evans walk with the bases loaded gave Hilbert a 3-0 leading heading into the bottom of the inning.
The next six runs of the game belonged to the Patriots as two runs in the second, and four runs in the third led to a 6-3 lead.
However, RBI hits by
John Riviere-Vejas in the fourth and six innings, combined with three more runs off of Valley Forge mistakes (two errors and a balk), gave Hilbert five unanswered runs and an 8-6 advantage heading into the bottom of the sixth.
David Alessi came into the game to pitch for the Hawks in the sixth inning looking to wrap up the win. Alessi did just that as he pitched two innings, allowing two hits and a run to earn his first career save.

- Jack Duffek (2-4, 2 RBI, 2 doubles) and Jairo Santos (2-3) each had multi-hit games at the plate for the Hawks.

Game 2:
The bats got going early in game two, as the Patriots plated three runs on three hits in the top half of the first to go up 3-0 before Hilbert had a chance to come to the plate.
The Hawks matched the Valley Forge offense, and then some, putting up a ten spot in the bottom half of the first. Hilbert used seven hits in the frame to take a 10-3 lead after each team's initial turn to bat.
John Riviere-Vejas had a pair of hits in the inning, including a lead off double that got things going for the Hawks.
Alex Ellison's bases-clearing double gave Hilbert their third, fourth, and fifth runs of the game after a pair of walks with the bases full put the first two runs on the board.
Billy LoBello doubled to score Ellison, and then came around to score the seventh run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Jairo Santos scored a pair of Hawks on a single to center field, and
Nolan Evans brought him home with a sacrifice fly to wrap up the scoring in the first.
The Patriots used the second, third, and fourth innings to chip away at the Hilbert lead, scoring at least two runs in each inning to knot the contest at 10 on a single in the top of the fourth.
LoBello's second RBI of the game in the bottom of the fourth brought Ellison home to give the Hawks the lead back, making it an 11-10 ballgame.
A pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning gave Valley Forge their first lead of the game, after going down seven runs in the first.
A third RBI from LoBello in the bottom of the sixth inning would kick off Hilbert's second big inning of the game. Another seven hit frame added nine more runs to the board to give the Hawks a 20-12 advantage heading into the final inning. The Hawks got RBIs from LoBello,
Konner Hauck, Riviere-Vejas, Santos, Evans,
Patrick Whelan (2),
Dustin Hendrix, and
