AUBURN, N.Y. – Hilbert College Baseball swept SUNY Canton in a nonconference doubleheader this afternoon. The offense of the Hawks put up 24 runs between the two games, as Hilbert took game one 13-6 and game two 11-1.
The Hawks benefited from a balanced offensive attack in the two-game set, as nine different players recorded an RBI for the royal and white.
Seven different pitchers stepped on the mound for Hilbert, with the group combining to allow just four earned runs in 14 innings of work.
Game 1:
SUNY Canton opened the scoring in the top of the first with a pair of runs to jump out to an early 2-0 lead before Hilbert stepped to the plate. However, Hilbert responded with two runs on their own in the bottom of the first on a double from
Jack Duffek.
Alex Ellison brought home
Konner Hauck with an RBI double in the second inning to give Hilbert its first lead of the game at 3-2. RBI singles from
Patrick Whelan and
Dustin Hendrix in the bottom of the third extended the lead to 5-2.
The Kangaroos were not done yet, as they scored three runs of their own in the top of the fourth to tie the game at five.
The game's next eight runs all belonged to the Hawks to give the Hilbert control of the game.
Emmanuel McClain singled to bring home Whelan,
Jairo Santos hit a sacrifice fly to score Hendrix, and McClain scored on an error in the fifth to give the Hawks a three-run lead again.
Hilbert broke the game open in the sixth thanks to two-RBI singles from both McClain and
John Watson. Hendrix scored his second run of the game on an error to complete the five-run inning and give Hilbert a 13-5 lead.
Canton got one run back in the top of the seventh, but there was no comeback in this one as the Hawks won game one, 13-6.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- McClain (3), Duffek (2), and Watson (2) each recorded multiple RBIs for the Hawks.
- McClain, Hendrix, Duffek, and Whelan all had a pair of hits in the contest.
- David Alessi earned his second win on the mound for the Hawks, pitching two scoreless innings, allowing no hits and just one walk.
Game 2:
Game two of this doubleheader saw the Hawks score early and often on their way to a convincing 11-1 victory.
Hilbert opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first with three runs to take an early lead. RBIs from Whelan, Hendrix, and Hauck got the Hawks on the board first in this one.
The offense kept rolling for the Hawks as runs in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings gave Hilbert the first eleven runs of the contest. Four RBIs from Santos, and RBI from
John Riviere-Vejas, and a pair of runs on passed balls allowed the Hawks to enjoy an 11-0 lead after five innings.
The performances of
Ronald Mort (W),
Alex Rumfola,
Ryan Hilton, and
Johnray Hasfurter on the mound shut down any hope of a Canton comeback as the four Hilbert pitchers scattered six hits through seven innings of work where they allowed just one run (unearned).
An error in the seventh inning allowed the Kangaroos to get on the board and break the shutout of the Hawks.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- Santos had a big game at the plate, going 2/3 with 4 RBIs.
- Mort made the start and earned hist first win of the season, going four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five batters.

The Hawks will open conference play with a trip to Greensburg to take on the Bobcats from the University of Pitt Greensburg on Friday. The doubleheader will mark the first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference games for both teams this season.
