GREENSBURG, PA – Hilbert College Baseball opened up Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play this afternoon with a doubleheader against the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Bobcats.
The hosting Bobcats came out on top in both games to drop the Hawks to 0-2 on the young AMCC campaign.
The Hawks led the day in hits thanks to big days at the plate from
Jack Duffek (5-9, 1 RBI),
Jairo Santos (4-8, 2 runs scored), but the team ultimately fell 5-2 in game one and 12-11 in game two.
Game 1:
Hilbert opened up the scoring in the top of the first after
John Riviere-Vejas was brought home from third by
Jack Duffek for an RBI single. Riviere-Vejas reached first on a hit by pitch, got himself in scoring position with a steal of second base, and advanced to third on a balk before ultimately scoring the game's first run on the Duffek single.
The Bobcats used three hits to score two runs in the bottom half of the first to take the lead in their first trip to the plate. A solo homerun in the bottom of the second extended the Greensburg lead to 3-1.
Alex Ellison scored on a wild pitch after a leadoff walk in the top of the third to cut the lead to 3-2.
Greensburg grabbed a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to extend their lead to 5-2, which would be how game one finished.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- Dylan Moorhouse (4-1) pitched all six innings for Hilbert, allowing five earned runs while striking out five Bobcats in the losing effort on the mound.
- Santos and Duffek each had a pair of hits in the contest, with Duffek collecting the only RBI for the Hawks.
Game 2:
Game two's first three runs belonged to the hosts as two runs in the first, and a run in the second had Greensburg leading 3-0 after the first two innings.
The score would stay that way until Hilbert scored four runs to take the lead in the top of the fifth inning.
Patrick Whelan got the Hawks on the board with a 2 RBI single that brought home
Alex Ellison and
Griffin McAndrews to bring Hilbert within one run.
Dustin Hendrix singled to score Whelan to tie the game, and
Jack Duffek scored on an error after singling to give Hilbert its' first lead of the doubleheader.
However, the Bobcats immediately responded with seven runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 10-4 lead.
Hilbert got one run back in the top of the sixth on a
Griffin McAndrews single that scored
Nolan Evans after his triple got the inning started.
Two more runs in the bottom of the sixth from Greensburg made it a 12-5 game, but the bats of the Hawks got going for a late-game comeback bid.
Evans got the rally started in the top of the seventh with his first homerun as a Hawk, a two-run shot that scored Santos, to cut the lead to 12-7.
Hilbert continued to chip away at the lead in the eighth with an Ellison run off of a Greensburg error.
The Hawks brought it within one in the top of the ninth, as Riviere-Vejas' RBI single, and Whelan's 2 RBI single made it a 12-11 game. However, the Bobcats were able to close the game out and hang on for the two-game sweep.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- Patrick Whelan (3-6, 4 RBIs) and Nolan Evans (2-4, 3 runs, 2 RBIs, 3B, HR) had huge games at the plate for the Hawks.
- Duffek (3), Ellison (2), and Santos (2) all also chipped in with multi-hit games.
- Spencer Harford, David Alessi, Brendan Walsh, Ryan Hilton, and Johnray Hasfurter split the duties on the mound for Hilbert, allowing three earned runs as a group.

nd when Wells comes to Hamburg for a doubleheader. First pitch of the two game set is scheduled to take place at 1 pm at FSSJ Field.
